5.4 engine noise at startup

2005 Expedition
5.4L engine
49K miles.

Just in the last couple of days, my wifes expedition started making a wierd noise when cranking it. I have not isolated it as to "when" it happens. So far it has happened when the engine was cold/warm/hot. Oil level is fine. The oil pressure immediatly jumps to normal.

I know its not the starter. It doesn't sound like the "ticking" of lifters... Its only a brief sound, I guess it could be described as banging a big metal pan a few times at breakneck speed. I would almost say its something loose, but i'm sure the sound is internal to the engine.

Any suggestions?

I do use the motorcraft fl-820s filter

thx
Greg

Ok.. found on another thread the TSB 06-19-8
At the end of the TSB it states:

START UP RATTLE

Some 2004 F-150 and 2005 F-150, Expedition, Navigator, F-Super Duty, and Mustang vehicles may have a rattle on startup that lasts 1 to 3 seconds. If initial pre-checks have been completed and the noise sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine, replace the VCT Phaser Kit. If the engine continues to make the rattle noise after the initial startup do not exchange VCT.
What is a VCT Phaser and how difficult would it be to install this kit? About how much is the kit, and any guesses as to what an "average" price a mechanic would charge?

Thx

she has 49,500 miles on it, so warranty work is out of the question.

Is this a "need to fix ASAP" kind of problem? Or is it a "save up some $$ & get it fixed" ?

Thx for the reply..

well, I changed the plugs in my 97 F150 by myself, and made a promise that I would never do that again ... I understand why the shop charges so much to do that.

If its internal to the engine, I would rather pay someone to do it, so I could take it back if its not "right".

???
Anyone? Is this safe to drive or a need to fix "asap"..

I changed the oil a few min's ago (a couple thousand miles before it was due) and replaced the filter.

First crank it knocked really bad... Second & third crank it was quiet..

Hopefully it will stay quiet..

Mine turned out to be power steering pump on my 01 5.4 engine. I had ford replace the pump and they put a bum one on, so they had to change it again...but it was the most god awful sound for about 2 seconds during cold starts.

Just a thought,

Typically the phasers only make noise when hot. The TSB states that it should be quiet when cold and ticks at hot idle, dropping off @~1200 RPM's+. Rattle at start up sounds like no oil getting to the top end. Good job with the 820S, but what oil are you using?

ever since the oil change saturday nite, the noise happens less frequently. Both times were when the engine was cold though.. There is no real "ticking" to speak of, other than the normal loud 5.4 noises you usually hear.. The rattle does sound like no oil to top end, like you stated...

I was using Casteroil 5w-20 full synthetic, but now I have switched to Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend ( and just change oil every 4000)..

The passenger's side is a bitch to do, the driver's side phaser isn't too bad to replace. You do need a special tool that'll allow you to replace the phaser without removing the timing cover, and when using this tool you've got to be extra careful that it doesn't pop out of place or slip.

I talked to the service manager at the local ford dealership yesterday... They haven't replaced the VCT phasers in any expeditions, but have replaced them in Rangers??

Anyhow, he stated he thinks he would have to pull the engine to replace the VCT phasers?? That is not correct, is it?

thx.
