new 1992 f-150
i just bought a 1992 ford f-150 that has 285000 miles on it as well as it leaks oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid, im wondering if it would be better to rebuild the entire engine (4.9 liter) and transmission automatic w/ overdrive beacause i am going to be pulling a 20 ft goosneck but i dont want to put a larger engine in it and dont know if the engine will last as long as i need it to i also want to start rebuilding the truck because it is the body style i like and it is in kinda ruff shape i have never owned one before and could use some tips on where to start

If the engine is running OK, the most I'd do is a compression test & vacuum test to begin with. If it passes, just replace the leaking gaskets, and keep maintaining & driving it until it fails compression (which could be another decade or 2).

If the trans is an E4OD (code E on the door sticker) AND has been rebuilt since 1995, it probably doesn't need another rebuild, but it could certainly use an external filter & another cooler if you're going to tow with it. In the meantime, make SURE it has some good fluid in it (I highly recommend MotorCraft's new version of Mercon V). If it's not TRANS code E, don't tow with it.

As for the rest: just take your time & do each thing right, and it'll come together. For more support with pre-'97 trucks, check out FSB.
