There are quite a few threads about this issue. Some have had luck getting it fixed; others haven't. If your dealer determines the problem, please post the resolution here.

Here are a few threads to get you started:
Hard to start when warm 5.4L.
05 FX4 hard to start *sometimes*
Truck would not start....
Truck wont start....sometimes

Mine has done this about 5 or six times then it won't do it again for maybe a month or so. I had a 2003 Mach 1 stang and it would do it every so often too. Mine has always started on the second or third try so I haven't worried about it too much. Also it mainly does it on a short trip when it doesn't get good and warm, or if it was warm and sat for about 20 min. but didn't get all the way cool. Hope the dealer gets it fixed for ya, but I'd expect the good ole "Could not duplicate the problem" BS

My 05 periodically does this. I'm thinking it's b/c I don't hold the key long enough(popping the key sorta speak). Either way, I hit the gas pedal once then let it sit for 5-10 seconds. It doesn't hesitate to start after that. I've found it only occurs once or so a month. I'm not having the stealership dissect my machine to TRY to find an answer. If it get to be more common, I might look into it. Can't be the fuel filter on mine, just changed it.

Well, I hope you can get it fixed. I understand your frustration, although I can also understand why Ford can't fix it if they can't duplicate the problem. In my case, the problem only seems to recur once every 5 months or so.

I'm thinking that I might go ahead and change out the starter terminal wiring pigtail myself. Anyone have any idea how difficult that job is? I figure it can't be that bad...

Yeah, the first time it happened to me I thought I might have released the key too soon, too. However, I discovered that it didn't matter how long I held the key in the Start position when this problem occurred: the truck would either die immediately after the engine turned over 1-2 times (i.e., engine just stops cranking with key still in the Start position), or the engine would just crank and crank without starting. BTW, I also wait about 30-45 seconds between restart attempts. The truck usually starts normally on the third or fourth attempt.

FWIW, Ford reflashed my PCM after I reported the problem the first time in Oct 05. This seemed to help for a while, then the problem returned.

My truck 07 s-cab fx4 did the same exact thing once. I just got done playing basketball and hopped in. It fired up and as soon as I let off the key, it died. I was like WTF...sat there for 5 seconds and turned the key again...fired right up and I haven't had a problem since. That was at about 400 miles...I now have 800 or so. I never gave it a second thought.

Cool

Have had the same problem in the past with my 06 5.4. It usually happend to me at least once a week. Always once the engine was warm. I could even duplicate this on a regular basis outside the regular F ups from the engine. I got mine fixed with the EDGE. I even tried to duplicate it after I installed the EDGE and it hasn't happened again. I'm on LVL 2 by the way. I'm convinced that my problem was in the computer program that the ford engineers pulled out of their colective butts. Don't you guys think that it's weird how well these trucks run after putting in a tune? You would think Ford would live up to their reputation. Don't even get me started on the brake rotors. Unfortunately, "Built Ford Tuff" isn't what it used to be folks .

I totally agree about pulling the tune out of their butts. With the edge it runs like it should have from the factory. Ford should have to re emburse me for the cost of my Edge
