More power from 4.6L

Hey guys, FNG here with a question. I know it has peobably been covered in here but I can't find it..
I want to get more power from my 4.6L 2006 super cab. For the most part it is ok but now that I am towing an enclosed bike trailer it really struggles going down the highway. I was thinking about going with a cold air intake and a cat back exhaust. First question is will this void any part of my warranty and will I have to do anything to the fuel management system or can I just bolt it on and go? Anybody do this with their 4.6 with good results?
Thanks

from my understanding, a tuner works really well.
my question is what weight trailer and what gears you have? trans?

The trailer empty weight is 1600 lbs. I haul a motorcycle in it that weighs about 800 lbs and with other gear I am pulling maybe 2600 lbs.
I have the stock setup 4wd with automatic trans.

Costwise for total price probably be cheaper for a tuner and yield better results but it depends too. A Cold air kit is not that expensive, the exhaust is the one thats going to hurt you. I plan to buy my muffler and have someone pipe it locally.

Chip, tuner, and exhaust will wake it up rather nicely....

Thanks for the replies I just have to educate myself on the chips, tuners and other options and figure out a way to go. Definitely need some more power.

Tuners - Either an XCal2 tuned by Troyer or an Edge Evolution
Exhaust - choose one that you like how it sounds
Intake - Get a good quality one (no ebay junk) K&N, etc.

A tuner will give you great bang for your buck and it is somewhat easy on the wallet. Gears are the next thing that will offer great results but not easy on the wallet unless you are able to do it on your own. Cold air intake, cat back and pully's are good mods as well but they do not yield the same results as the first two I mentioned.

SO dumb question, Do I need both a tuner and a chip or just one or the other?

This has been covered in the aftermarket intake forum, do a search on "transfer function" and read the thread, Cai intake, chip needed? it should be on the first or second page you will learn more than you ever wanted to know. I would reccomend the 3" AF1, you wont need a chip right away, or go to troyer and get the stage one combo, but get rid of the crummy magnaslow and put on a flowmaster 50 series, it sounds way better . I have a KN 77 series on my truck, but pick the one you like best, troyer has custom tunes to correct many other aftermarket intakes. My truck is hella older than yours, and I routinely tow around 3000lbs. with it, I have no worries with my intake, Sido flowmaster 50, and Edge. Oh yeah, if you don't really want to risk your engine with an intake, read the 3rd link on 4.10s

here's the links,

I couldn't find the thread I was looking for, but you get the idea

A CAI will help...some. A tuner will help...some. A cat-back exhaust will help...some. Are you getting the point? The more you do, the more it will help.
You can wing-it on your own and get whatever CAI and exhaust you want, with maybe an Edge and prolly will have better results. While I'm not directly promoting Troyer, common sense tells me if you follow his advice, you'll get the most bang outta that 4.6 you can. He's done more mods than perhaps all of us combined on Fords so I'd put a lot into what he says works. Yes, he's running a business and needs to sell stuff to make a profit but if he sold "snake oil" mods, he wouldn't have such an immense amount of positive feedback on just this site alone.
You could just go with what looks cool, or sounds great but if you're really interested in making the most out of the 4.6, I'd considering taking the advice of someone that makes them run better for a living.
That's my opinion..I could be wrong.

if you plan on hauling that trailer often, you may consider a new gear ratio.

what axle code is on your door jamb?

Axle code B6..

So the more I read the more I become educated on this..
From what I have read so far, changing the gears to 4:10 and a tuner might be a good start.

yes 4.10's are a good ratio for hauling with stock tire height. this makes the most dramatic effect. you have to realize it makes a relatively large difference, and isnt easily changed or reversed.

Is there an downside to doing that? I don't drive the truck much as far as long trips go. I have had it 5 months and only have about 5k miles on it.
