They also sell various models of code readers - from simple to $$$.

Harbor freight - simple code reader - $40
Walmart - better code reader - $65
Other sources - $125 - $2000. Depends on your desired feature set. The <$250 ones can't read real time or Mode 6. None of the ones under $700 or so can read ABS, SRS, or other subsystems.

The free check at the auto parts stores can at least give you a list of the stored codes. You do not have to take their advice on what they mean, research them independently unless they are obvious.
