Checking codes

Is there a way to check a code short of buyng something? Is there a device to buy that is reasonable?

If you have an AutoZone or similar outfit close by - they typically can read codes for free for you.

They also sell various models of code readers - from simple to $$$.

Even WallyMart sells readers these days

Depends on what year your truck is. Add the specifics to your profile &/or signature so it always shows. Year, trim level, engine, 2/4WD, ...

Yup - my bad. I made the assumption it was an OBDII-compliant vehicle...

Auto parts store - free --advice there is worth what you pay for it....

Harbor freight - simple code reader - $40

Walmart - better code reader - $65

Other sources - $125 - $2000. Depends on your desired feature set. The <$250 ones can't read real time or Mode 6. None of the ones under $700 or so can read ABS, SRS, or other subsystems.

The free check at the auto parts stores can at least give you a list of the stored codes. You do not have to take their advice on what they mean, research them independently unless they are obvious.
