coolant...

My question spurs from a previous experience. My last truck, a ranger, was handed down to me by my dad. He always used a 50/50 mix in the coolant system, and I began having problems with it. First my truck overheated very quickly, and I found out it was because the radiator was clogged, due to corrosion. I had it boiled out, and soon after my waterpump went, also due to corrosion. Upon replacing the thermostat and waterpump, I noticed the engine block was entirely corroded where the coolant flowed, and all I can think of is because of the 50/50 mix. If he had used say pure antifreeze, wouldn't this have prevented the corrosion? I flushed it many times, and essentially the corrosion just grew like cancer, and actually took out another water pump after just about a year, and was the main reason I got rid of the truck, although it ran perfect at 150,000 miles.

I'm basically concerned about what I should use in my coolant system on my new f150. I really dont want to go through that drama again, because it's completely irreversable. coolant system flushes and sealers do NOTHING I learned.

I'm not worried about my truck overheating. It does get to be 110 in the summer, but I mean coolant systems are pretty advanced these days.

suggestions?

Corrosion in the cooling system stems from the same problem as corrosion in a heater core, which is a very common problem in these trucks. The culprit is electrolysis, regular tap water, particularly hard tap water has metel deposits in it, this is what makes the water hard. As a result this metal in the water conducts electric current to the radiator and heater core which causes them to pit and corrode. Try using a 50/50 mix with distilled water or purified water next time you flush the cooling system.
