Advantage: Easier to get to for an oil change, less mess when changing.
Disadvantage: A seemingly minor fender-bender can result in a punctured oil filter or damaged line, thereby emptying the oil and destroying the engine.

Was the remote oil filter an option at the dealer on '97 4.6's?
Mine has one...and I never even knew it until reading a few threads on here recently. I'm curious because the guy I bought it from was the original owner and he never changed the oil himself.

Super hella easy to change the oil. Wouldn't trade it at all for the slight risk of an accident.

Your remote set up is the factory set up. Pretty good set up, except the lines are known to develop leaks over time.

Unfortunately that will only remote it from the remote that we are talking about.

For those that don't know. '97 and I'm not sure how far beyond. 4.6 and I think the 5.4 too, with 4x4 had remote eng. filters because of the limited room do to the front differential. It was standard that way, not an option.

There isn't even an option to not remote it with out changing out the lower coolant elbow / oil filter mount on the engine.

From what I've seen, just the 4x4s.

Cool

HI!... I installed my own custom dual remote oil filter set-up. Advantages are wat easier to change the filters. Twice the filter size of the stock oil filter x2. Less messy changes. Mine are located in the path of airflow so there is a cooling effect as well. Disadvantages. NONE.
