05 towing 7000lb travel trailer

I need some opinions......Ive read alot about THE EDGE, where people are looking for speed, where as Im looking for towing power to pull my 7000 lb travel trailer. what other modifications would I need to get more power out of towing. like the exhaust, the cold air intake would it help me?
thanks alot

Keep an eye on what exhaust and air intake you are choosing. Some hurt backpressure and would hurt your towing in lower rpm's. The Edge has a setting for towing that will give added power and firm up shifts.

05 towing 7000lb camper

thanks scott1981 for the advice. i found gibson exhaust not for towing purposes. I look on truck performance web site under gibson exhaust It tells right on there not for towing of heavy duty off road.

I would be more concerned with the transmission and rear diff. Overheat and blow either of those and all the HP in the world is useless.

thanks for the advice. supercharger would be awesome but out of my price range. Your right about transmission and diff issues. The more I think about it start adding horsepower better chances overheating the transmission or diff. Do u think I should switch synthetic oil for diff. I have the towing package. I'm thinking about getting a transmission temp gauge.

The biggest help would be the tuner with the temp guage and possibly lower rear gears to help with power getting the load moving. I pulled around the weight your talking about with my 06, 4.6, 3.55 gears and while I wouldnt win any races it did keep up with traffic. Also I am completely stock, I know a tuner would have been a big help.

My truck has 5.4 with 3.73 pos trac. Its seems sluggish. Maybe I'm not use to hauling a camper around. I hauled it twice so far. 1st time it only had 3000 miles on it and hauled about 75 miles of highway. 2nd time with more in town a little highway about 7000 miles and 35" tires on the truck for about 50 miles. I plan hauling it to campgrounds this summer but taking the tires off which is going to be a pain in the a--. I took it to the dealer about it but they said nothing wrong. May be not enough miles on it yet. I don't drive it everyday It only has 9000 miles on it since june 05. I have a company vehicle I use for work.

You have more power and better gearing than me. But your right I have read of some claiming these motors can take 20k to "wake up" I think the tuner would help that sluggish feeling, but your right about the added rotating mass and roll out ratio of the tires hurting you. Exactly why i have not lifted mine, and probably wont be able to

I'f your pulling a trailer I'm guessing you have a tow package on the truck ford builds rearends and trans to take the torque both auto trans are made to take 400 in torque unless your pulling 17,000 lbs like me you would need to upgrade to a shift kit and a lower stall.f150's are underpowered

4r70w's are designed to take 700 ft lbs=-key is "designed" :-phil
those 35's are killing you- did you coompensate pcm for those tires- your shift points are off do to those taller than stock tires fyi

Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt changing the profiles for larger tires only corrects the speedo. I dont think it changes anything else, and therefore does not really help performance.

35 inch tires will fit with just a 2.5 leveling kit a long as u don't go mud stomping I'm running 35x13.5x18 pro comp extreme AT on maxx 6 18x9 rim. I had to shave inch off inner fender well. I think if I went with a thinner tire I would've been all right. with no cuttiing

Towing a lot of weight with 35's...you should be looking at 4.56 or 4.88 gears IMHO.

I tow 7,000 lb with 31.5-inch street tires (285/60R18) & 4.10s.
No problems at all. I do have a supercharger.

I can't imagine towing a trailer with taller gears (3.73, 3.55, whatever) and 35's.

Actually, I can imagine it...my bro-in-law runs 35s with a 3.73 in his 2005 F150 5.4. He's got a cat-back and a programmer, and it's a complete dog when towing his toy hauler.

A buddy's truck, a 2004 F150 with 35s, cat-back, no programmer, and 4.56 gears, is great pulling the same trailer. Whenever my bro-in-law needs to tow the toy hauler, he swaps trucks with our buddy...he's getting re-geared very soon.

IMHO no bolt-on or chip will give you the torque multiplication of gears.

Yes and no, you put a 700 ft/lb motor in front of the 4R70w, it'll be lunch. The 4R70w, 4R100, 5R110, ect get their rating after the multiplication of the TC.

7000 lb trailer? I'd tranny temp gauge, brake controller, and you'll be good to haul.
