Drove my new F150 XLT 5.4 down to AZ from B.C. at a reasonable speed and got 22mpg ( 4.5 liters to Canadian Gallon). Then around town here in Apache Jct, which is a lot of stop and go I am getting 16.8 mpg to 4.5 liters of gas. Really happy with this new machine.I have the small extended cab with the reverse opening door, which is excellent when loading junk into the back. No real complaints after 6000 km. I gave it a oil change at 4000 km and will switch to synthetic at 8000 km. My Crown Vic with it's 4.8 was a great car and would deliver plus 30 mpg on the highway and once 36 with a tailwind.. My brother has a Dodge Diesel 2004-nothing but trouble and he is a Diesel Mechanic at a Pulp Mill. He told me to go Ford F150 with the 5.4. All the logging camps use Ford as do the huge tar sands operations in northern Alberta - just a tougher truck and as my brother said"cheaper to repair"...so take that to the bank. I did not like the Silverado due to NO room behind the wheel........Ken

First things first- I am drunk. I dont wont to sound like an *******, but that will probably happen. I have an '04 xlt 4.6 4x4. it gets ****ty gas mileage. but it can haul nearly anything you put in it or behind it, so i dont care what mpg it gets. if i wanted mpg i'd get a kia. you cant tell a mpg difference b/t the 4.6 and 5.4. i go to college (uva) and work at a chrysler/ford dealership over the summers and on breaks so i've worked on most dodges and fords. the dodge sells b/c it has a good name...it sounds cool to say "hemi." if "triton" sounded cooler it would sell more. dodge is selling a gimic with the hemi name, and once they realized it sold well they put it in every vehicle they make (cars, jeeps, etc)

like others have said, if you pick a truck based on gas mileage you're an idiot and i hope you get stuck driving a 2wd 4cyl something, or stuck driving something even worse, a hondra ridgeline.

there is a reason the f-150 has been the best selling vehicle like 28 years... you wont regret buying one. there are about 900,000 people a year who buy f-150s if that tells you anything. if only ford made cars as well as they made trucks they wouldnt be on the verge of bankruptcy.

I think Lumadar made clear and i agree with him, if you are buying truck forget about MPG. First think about what actually do you want. Do you want to save money then i would say go with hybrid cars. And like other members said this is ford f150 forum if you ask anyone they will tell you go with ford. if you ask same question on chevy forum then they will say go with chevy. i am happy with my ford and i dont care about mpg that much.

Yeah I gotta have both, I drive it all the time. - a truck and MPG's . So I keep my TB and elbow shiny on the inside , replace my forward O2's every other year - clean the MAF and K & N - Change the plugs out @ 50k . Taking care and keeping it breathing well . gets me 16mpg , pretty fair for a 200k 5.4L..

I could prolly squeeze a couple more mpg's or better , adding e-fans, pulleys..4.10's ..Someday lol..

from the FWIW department. I have had my 07 F150 Supercrew 4x4 5.4 6.5 foot bed 3.73 geared pickem' up for 3 weeks now. I have 1100 miles on the clock. Checked it on the second tank and got 17.1 mpg with 65% highway and 35%rural/city driving. Not too bad in my book. It is the biggest 150 you can get. I've had a 2002 Super crew and a 2000 extendend cab both 5.4 and both saw 18.5 -19 highway. I was scared my 07 would not do that. Looks like I was worried about nothing.
My 97 was a 4.6 and never saw over 18 mpg. I've said it for years the 4.6 gets worse milage all things considered. At least in a larger cab 4x4. For $900 the 5.4 is worth it if you drive your vehicle for 100k.

Also if you're buying a truck and complaining about mileage maybe you shouldn't be driving one. Maybe a van or a Freestar would fit your needs.

Guess Im a idiot then. I picked a truck that gets 7.0 mpg instead of 5.5 mpg. Doesnt sound like much.... but it saves me $13,000.00 a year.

I have an '02 KR ext. cab 4x4 with the 5.4 and my buddy has a 2005 GMC Sierra ext cab 4x4 Z71 with the 5.3 and we get pretty close to the same mileage..He may get a mile or 2 to the gallon more than me but that is all...

well...it's been a few weeks since i've posted here - looks like my thread has gotten everyone a little fired up...Here's what I've seen from 5 or 6 different websites (including this one, other forums, edmunds.com, caranddriver.com):

Ford - 5.4L - Best Selling, but gas mileage lacks compared to other full size(avg is like 15)
Chevy - 5.3L - Second Selling (although edmunds thinks it's #1), avg mileage is (17.5)

and i've personally test drove 2 07 classics (1500 with the 5.3L) and it will haul some butt - I don't care what anyone says...plus my friend (same one who gets 17-18mpg in the city) and I helped pull my fiance's brother out of the mud - we hooked the chain up and BARELY touched the gas and we drug him (kind of as a joke) for like 100 feet with him trying to stop and go in reverse...we couldn't even tell we were pulling anything

Next, I'm not buying a truck for it's gas mileage - I liked ford AND chevy, but couldn't decide which one I wanted so I started looking at the specs and since i'm a poor college kid who is about to get married 2-3MPG is a big...

I was considering getting an 07 frontier, but even though it's a v6 it got 16mpg in the city and 21mpg on the highway. Chevy's website says its 5.3L v8 gets 15/19, 4.8L v8 gets 16/21, and Ford's says it gets 14/18...

i may go with chevy because of gas mileage...
I guess you just missed the giant f**king white stickers stuck on the windows, eh?
