I have a 2003 supercab 2wd with a 4.6L (superchips 1715 & airforce1 intake kit) and a 2005 supercab 4wd with a 5.4L (x-cal2). When I want to jump in and fly down the highway the 03 with the 4.6L is excellent. Very good throttle response, decent mileage (for a Ford), perfect for a daily user. However, if you put any kind of a load on her (like forgetting to scrape the mud off your boots before throwing them in the back), she chokes. Granted if you run the tach up to 4500 rpm you can pull a load but who wants to strain the drive train like that. It does have 3.08 gear which doesn't help at all but the truck is great for what it was designed to be, a daily driver with a bed in the back to throw that occasional light load.
The 05 4wd with the 5.4L has 3.73 gears. It will pull (with ease) anything I have thrown at it. The difference in gas mileage is rediculous however. About 19 in the 4.6 and closer to 11 with the 5.4L without a load.
In a nut shell which one is better is solely up to what your wants and needs are and the complete drivetrain of your particular vehicle.

Howed you end up with a 308 gear , there not in the specs ?? 308's would really suck lol.

My 5.4 averages 14-16 mpg w/355's

Efficiency is an amazing thing. It will probably even do a lot better if it ever gets the chance to run long enough to get broken in good.

Theres a night and day difference when pulling a load - How long have you owned a Ford and have you had 5.4L before. Well it's been proven , you need to start from the beginning of the thread.

The 5.4 makes power everywhere - the 4six make power at higher RPMS.

suuuure it does thats only possible if u make very little power down low so it doesnt use much fuel. it has nothing to do with volumetric efficiency just where the power is made.

HI!... Actually it has everything to do with "VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY". I get 21.3 MPG cruising at 70-72MPH at 2450-2500RPM in O.D.

HI!... Actually I have basically the same powerband as I had with my modded stock 5.4 except that it has been stretched to above 6000RPM. At my cruising speed of 2500RPM I'm already making 270RWH.P and 380RWTQ.

Neal,

Is your truck a 4x4?
