Rolled over truck engine...
Ok, heres the deal. My buddy has a 97 F150 that he just rolled over the otherday, and if his insurance will sell it back to him real cheap, I might buy it from him .
Im mainly wanting the engine and tranny, however Im wondering if the engine could have gotten damaged somehow? When it flipped over he said it was still running and he had to shut it off himself, Im not sure how long it ran upside down though-I doubt very long. Since then he has tried to crank it over a couple times without getting it started, Im thinking he might just need to reset the fuel switch though. There is oil that spilled out all over the underside of the hood too (pretty sure its oil, didnt take a close look at it really).
So is it possible that the engine is pretty messed up (scored cylinder walls, fried rings, etc) or is it probably fine? I would most likely tear the whole engine down and go through it all, Id like to not have to bore it out though if possible .?.? Probably do a somewhat performacne minded half rebuild with new heads and top end stuff, dont really want to mess with the bottom end, I suppose that is that part that could possibly have gotten messed up though.
Any damage that could have been done to the tranny?

Alright, cool.
A few other questions. His engine is the 4.6 liter, like mine is now. Im wondering if it would be possible to switch just the block for a 5.4 block. If his is a Romeo 4.6 I would need Windsor heads I know (I would most likely get ported ones anyway) and a 5.4 crank (longer stroke). 5.4 intake manifold is wider too I know, so I would need one of those. Is that all I would need to basically "make" it a 5.4 though, or are their way more differences than that?
If it is possible to do that, Im assuming I could still use my coil pack ignition (NOT the COP style like on the 5.4's)

I mean the old 4.6 style ignition, with the two 4 tower coils at the front of the engine and plug wires. I dont see why it wouldnt work though.
I didnt think Romeo heads worked on Windsor blocks, and vice-versa.
Connecting rods are the same lenght between the 5.4 and 4.6??

Jbrew, Ill check that outtoo. Most likely they heads will be replaced and built with new parts though...
