Engine running Hot

Hey guys my dad has a 97 f150 with the 4.6. The truck has 200,000 miles on it. He is having a problem with the truck running very hot for no reason. When this happens he has no heat in the cab and coolant comes out the overflow. Then it cools down and runs fine for awhile. He has changed the thermostat three times and it is in the correctly. Any thoughts?
