Extended Warrantee question
OK, so whether it is engine or the power windows, what should I be looking at in the price of an extended warranty? I'm building to order a 2007 FX4 SuperCrew (lots of extras). I'm a high millage driver. Here are the options they are offering at a dealership:
Here is the pricing: Any thoughts on AWS vs Ford? Will dealers go down in price?
AWS:
platnum - no deductable
5yr, 100,000 $2166
gold $2018
silver $1956
platnum 7yr, 100,000 $3033
Ford
5yr 100,000 - $2680
7yr 100,000 - $3235

I got the 5-year, 100k for my 2000. It expires in exactly 7 days. My last three vehicles all had the Ford ESP, and I've only ever had one claim denied (seat cover padding breaking down was considered normal wear and tear??). Aside from that, I've had exceptionally good luck with this truck. I've only made two claims under the extended warranty ($50 deductable both times) and have just about broken even.
My list of extended warranty issues (pulled off the web this morning):
20 July 2005
-The second set of clutch packs on the rear diff (first set was done under the 3/36 when the pinion seal started leaking)
-Replaced the upper and lower steering shaft (loose)
-Replaced the idler arm (bad)
-Leaky rear pinion seal (again)
-Auxiliary power point socket loose. Replaced.
-Low tone horn not working. Replaced.
24 October, 2006
-Exhaust noise at 2600-2800 RPM, high load, all gears. Found hole in right exhaust manifold.
-Trim piece on transmission shifter popped off again (first one replaced under 3/36)
-Funny popping noise when starting off and turning (e.g. pulling away from a drive-thru window or mailbox). Found a bad ball joint (supposedly).
They also said my brakes were 95% worn (funny how 2500 miles ago, when I did my last tire rotation, I saw they were less than half worn??) and that my front shocks were worn out (not a surprise, but not their problem as they're Ranchos, and they're not making any noise anyways). Do I smell add-ons???
So, with that in mind, I always opt for the longest and most comprehensive warranty I can get, but ONLY the Ford ESP. I refuse to buy any other ones. My parents did on their last two vehicles, and the companies that sold them were a royal pain in the butt to deal with. They routinely denied claims for such things as the fuel pump, ball joints, wheel hub assemblies, multifunction switches, and even an alternator. It was rare that they actually paid a claim, and when they did, my parents still had to pay it out of pocket first. It was not a pleasant experience. With the Ford ESP, you know exactly what is covered, and any dealership anywhere in the country (or North America for that matter) can do the work and get paid. It far, far less of an issue.
On each of my last three vehicles, I've definately gotten my money's worth oout of the ESP. Diff rebuilds alone on the first F-150 I had made up for it, on top of a whole list of other items.

Your quoted Ford prices are way high. Especially now with the increased powertrain warranty. My Ford Premium ESP for 5 yrs / 75k was under U$1000.
Search this site, there was a Ford dealer that sold the Ford ESP pretty cheap.

the secret is negotition you would not pay msrp for you truck so why pay full price for the extened warranty. i paid 100 over dealer cost and make them show you there price they pay and make it contingent that you will pay x-amount of dollars for warranty or you will buy your truck some place else.
