e-fan recommendations?

Got the Xcal2, AF1 and now am considering the efan mod (03 Exp 4.6). From what I can see, the two top contenders are the Troyer Fan kit and the FAL kit. Wondering about quality/reliability, ease and quality of installation materials and system and general experiences.

Thanks for your input.

Go with the FAL. Better mounting over the Troyer kit - bolts on versus ties through radiator. Plus, with the FAL you get a shroud so the fans pull through more of the radiator. The Troyer kit does not have a shroud, and the fans only pull through the area directly in front of each fan. Yeah, lots of guys run the Troyer fans, but IMHO the FAL kit is much better.

get a single 16" fan atleast 2800cfm. and a thermal switch with a relay. and hook up a mechanical on off switch to the relay so u can turn it on when uve got the ac on and ur idling not moving.

source for fans

Brandon,

The two places I have seen are: troyer performance (a sponsor of this site) and the flexalite.com (Others on this forum have suggested Summit Racing as a good source for the flexalite fans)

Wondering about anoyone's experience with either kit - especially wondering about reliability. I have no worries about the mechanical fan keeping my engine cool. How good / how long do the electric motors work, and what to do if they die?

The "promise" of gaining noticable hp, throttle repsonse and maybe a little mpg is very tempting. The logic of electric fans makes a lot of sense.

Iheard good things about mikes kit (mike is Mike Troyer of Troyer performance) except that no one like the mounting kit. Some had said it caused issues year or so later with the mounting method. I personally chose the flex-a-lite kit and man, it'd be hard to beat. It mounts directly in your stock mounting position so theres nothing to run through the radiator, hell even a rook shadetree mechanic could do it. Its like $425 shipped from summit, and well worth the cash.

flex a lite nice but no power gains

I put the fal in about 6 months ago. nice enough kit, look almost factory.
No gains in pwr or mileage. (strange because less work for the motor should = more mileage..) very noticable gain in noise.. you cant hear it in cab but with window open you get a good whirring.. no problems to date. seems reliable and no cooling problems pulling 700lbs. keep your fuse diagram handy as youll need to tap into your a/c relay and ignition on/off. I still havnt gottn around to tapping either one so my fan is controlled only by temperature.. which means after shutting truck off it, fan comes on and off several times .. like the little japanese cars.. lol. sounds a bit like star wars when it comes on so its funny. never caused any battery drainage problems either.

IMO.. without pwr or gas gains, its a waste of $400.00. (summit shipped to your door). Stock fan does the job without the noise.

There has to be at least some gain (probably more than the alledged flowmaster loss; sorry, just had to jab at someone with that) You are removing a huge drag on the belt taking that fan offline. Mine come on and go off after shutdown as well 2 or 3 times, but I let it do it.

I've had the Troyer fans on my truck for almost 2 years now. The only problem I have had is with the controllers. When setting the turn on temperature it is VERY IMPORTANT not to turn the screw past the stops, which is far too easy to do. I ruined 2 controllers by doing this. The first one, Troyer replaced for free. The second one I had to pay for.

The controllers have been working fine since I got them set, but in my opinion, they are way to easy to ruin just by turning the tiny little screw too far.

One other thing, I coated the legs of the relays on the controllers with dielectric grease. One of my relays shorted out due to water getting into the controller.

Search, please, and all your questions will be answered.

This question comes up at least once a week. Troyer, FAL, and LFP are all good choices. They all have their benefits and their shortcomings. Everyone picks one for a reason, and they all increase the Hp at the wheels by the same amount.

Here is my FAL setup, great item IMO. I too have heard pros/cons about all so really go with whatever one. The FAL move the most air (advertised) and I don't think mine have come on past 60% yet (3300 cfm's). The controller is pretty sweet.
