4.6 running poorly, please help
Hi,
I need some advice for my 2001 F-150 (4.6L 2wd, 110K miles). It feels like my engine is missing at low-mid throttle. My SES light is not on, but it really feels like a misfire. A couple of months ago, my SES was on and I had it scanned. I don't remember the code (pO420 I think), but the code was for catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1). I erased the code and it hasn't appeared again. Anyway, I can hear my engine backfiring through the intake and I have very little power. I can really hear a LOUD "ticking" under the left side of my truck, especially under heavy acceleration, however, I do not hear a ticking from the engine compartment. What do I need to check for? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and have a Great day!
Adam

check to make sure you plug wires are all snug down on the plugs and also make sure you dont have any water in any of the plug holes. my truck was running like crap for a long time also until i decided to check my plugs, and that was when i found water in plug hole #8 and the plug wire not secure on plug #3. So i blew the water out of #8, secured the wire on #3 and now she runs like a dream
Here is some of my insight based on what you explain.
Since you think you had a code involving the cats, discribe poor power, apparent backfire (which would be a miss also), ticking under the truck.
It might be an internal broken up cat on one side, blocking exhaust flow.
Over heating of the cat causing the sheet metal to make noise etc.
This would tend to upset the ox sensor feedback for fuel to that bank possibly making that bank lean and causing backfire.
Check it out and let us know.
On an 01 there are no plug wires. It's COP system.
Good luck.

Ticking sounds like a brick came loose - Cats only have a life expectancy of 6 years.
Faulty HO2S sensors do not produce the DTCs P0420 and P0430.
131 - 161 are O2 specific
