F-150 mpg problem

I have a 2005 F-150 XLT 5.4 liter with a 3.73 rear end ratio and 9800 miles. I purchased it new in July 2005. It gets 18 mpg on the interstate, but only gets 8 mpg consistantly in town. I am really disappointed. Is this normal, or could I have a problem that can be fixed?

4x4? Do you have larger after market tires? (anything over stock?). Proper tire inflation, clean air filter, etc. There are a lot of variables that can affect mpg.

No, I have nothing added and the truck is a 2 wheel drive. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Well i just got rid of a Lightning, and I could always see 8mpg if i got on the gas, which was often in that particular kind of vehicle. Other then that, check your tire pressure and air filter. Other then that I cannot think of anything on an 05 2wd that would cause a MPG difference like that. Goodluck.

I have an 06 5.4L 2WD Screw with an AF1 and Magnaflow catback that I run with a TP 87 performance custom tune. I drive the truck as soft as it can be driven around town and only get 13 mpg. I think it's the nature of these trucks and you won't get much more than that no matter what you do...

That sounds about right. Although I get 14 to 15 in my 4x4 Screw and 19 on the highway. Ordering a set of pulleys later this week to help the highway situation.

Exclamation very confused.. not sure which way to go...

i got a 99 f-150 ext.cab 104k miles 4.6L i think it has 3.55 gears not for sure....but i have changed: plugs, wires, maf, all o2 sensors, air intake sensors, k/n air filter, got a tornado fuel safer in intake tube , changed egr valve and sensor, pretty much every sensor on the truck.. have had the cats tested to see if were clogged... which arent.. both intake manifold gaskets had a fuel lean problem at one time.. the truck used to get bout 21-24 mpg bout 6 months ago using 87 octane ...but running 91-93 octane in it now i get 13-15 if im lucky... but as time progressed the truck has lost power... just has no guts.. any solutions..? ideas i'm all ears.. where did the power go how do i get it back?

That is a wide variation. However, if you do all stop and go in your city driving with no long stretches "at speed" and a lot of idleing at stop signs, I think that it is possible. I get 19.3 on the highway and 17.2 around town, but a lot of my town driving is on freeways and long stretches between stops.

How are you figuring the mph's, sounds like you can't even go 200 mile on a tank of gas. Some folks here say there's a hi-tech gage in the newer truck's thats tells them their mpg's. Don't think I'd trust that, I like the old fashion way of filling the tank up and divide the miles.

Thumbs up

A suggestion:
Reset the pcm(disconnect the battery neg terminal) wait 30 minutes.
This should reset the unit so that it can "LEARN" your driving habits.
I have a "05 KR supercrew with 5.4l and 3.73 rear end. My fuel economy has never been that bad. I drive a combination of city/highway.
