02 4.6L misfire

My truck recently starting running/idling rough so I took it in to AutoZone to get a code for it. Misfire in cylinder #7, and some other code dealing with misfire under 1000rpm. My extended warranty that I purchased ran out last month from what the Ford dealership tells me today. I was still well under 60,000 miles, but I only purchased 4 years apparently instead of the 5 that I thought I purchased. Anyway, they said some coil was going to have to be replaced, the spark plug, and an adjustment or reset of the computer. This was going to cost around $500. Any advice from the members here? Is this something a family mechanic could do? If not, should I call around for pricing or should I just let the dealership do it?

should be very easy for you or a friend/family member familiar with auto maintenance to do - I would just do the plugs for starters. You didn't mention what mileage you are at, but it might be worth your while to do all the plugs. I think you are looking at coil on plug deal, but I'd skip replacing those just yet.

Someone in here will have to verify this, but I think the computer will reset if you disconnect the neg battery terminal for a bit.

If you get it all back together and have the same problem, perhaps go ahead with the COPs too.

Yea, My 02 I had started running rough at 47K. So I bought some new plugs and put them in and it ran fine after that. I didn't even need to reset the cpu. chavez243ca is right disconnect the battery for 30 minutes. One thing I did notice with my plugs was the one on the passanger side (3rd away from the front) burned a little different. The plug look a little different than the rest. I dove it another 10K before I traded up to my 05.

Becarful on tightening the plugs. They are known to fly out. You should tourq them to spec. I won't use anything but Motocraft or Autolite plugs.

Motorcraft or Autolite is what you'll find. What ever you decide on using don't get Bosch. Not worth the money and your truck won't like them either. Just my 2 cents

You might want to go ahead and change the coil on the #7 cylinder. I had the same problem on my 01' and I changed the plugs first and it came back after about 1k miles. Dont do all of them just the one the threw the code and make sure and use dialectric(spelling?) grease liberally on the new coil. My dad took it to a mechanic and i came out less than 100 dollars. I think the new coil was about 70 and the new plug was like 7 or something. He charged half an hour labour but if it happened again i would do it myself. Its not very hard.

It'd be nice to get out of this for under $200. I'm already down $85 just for the diagnostic from the dealership that I didn't know I was going to have to pay.

That's not hard to do, this problem has been discussed many times. Lookup "misfire" - or threads & posts by "jbrew" find that under my user name(menus) , I provide links and procedures within this engine forum. 8 new COP's /8 motorcraft plugs "platinums" as a kit selling for $130.

There's two ways to search this site , either one works , you just have to do it. - SEARCH

Good Luck ( :

i had the same exact thing happen with my truck, i thought it was going to be the coil, but it turns out it was a bad plug, i already had all the coils anyway, so i just had them replaced while my mechanic was messing arond with the computer/plugs...
