Will your 5.4L Expedition spin the rear wheels?
Will your 5.4L Expedition spin the rear wheels?
I'm not one to abuse or hot rod my truck. (I have an Acura and Aprilia sportbike for that
) I believe I may be having some power issues as is described here.
The reason I ask about spinning wheels is when I first got the truck a few years back, I remember turning right from a stop sign on to a service road, getting on it, and as the weight shifted left, the right tire LIT UP. I didn't even have it to the floor. Conditions were dry and clean. (no gravel or dirt)
I just bought an Edge Evo programmer, loaded the program, and went out to give it it a try. No matter what I did, I couldn't even get so much as a little chirp, slip, nothing. This certainly isn't the power I remember that day I came screaming on to the service road.
As I said, I don't ever drive my expedition like this so the only thing I have to compare it to was that one time a few years ago. Should stomping on the gas while cutting a hard left or right break the tire loose like it did that day many moons ago or did that tire happen to be sitting on an oil spill?
BTW, I have a 2001 Expedition 5.4L with no mods. Just a K&N and the programmer.

When my Expy was stock I'd have to try really hard to get wheelspin in a low-speed, sharp turn. I didn't have LSD back then.
At nearly 6,000 lb and only 235hp from the factory (I have a 97), this is to be expected.
Even now with a Procharger, 285 stickies and LSD, I have to give it the boot I pretty hard in the dry to smoke them. But with skinny non-performance tires the blower lights them up pretty easily.

Tires might have something to do with it. With Goodyears, I had no problem breaking loose the rear end on my 4.6L '97 SCab, Grand Cherokee and Liberty. When I switched over to Yokohama Geolanders, no more spinning tires.
My '06 Expedition 5.4L (300 HP) with Continental shoes won't break loose either. Granted the Expedition has a 3.73 limited slip rear end, but the truck has quite a bit more get-up-and-go (0-45 MPH) than my F-150's.

I still have the same same tires, just much more worn down now. And I do have Continentals on it. It sounds like I may have been over some polished concrete or something else when it spun. Even back then when I did it I remember thinking...."really?" Before the Expy, I had a 1992 Z28 and left rubber everywhere. I really didn't expect the truck to do what it did.
I haven't tried the performance tune yet on the Edge (#3). I'm looking forward to it though.

The 4.6 was rated for a bit less, I think it was 220 hp.
The torque dirrefences were a bit more substantial between the two, but hp was somewhat close.
Both engiens were helped by the PI heads that Ford put into them in later model years.
