pi or not to pi

ok so i'm trying to decide on a 97 or 98 with the 5.4, or a 99+ with the 4.6. i plan on getting a monster box or something for the 4.6 and was wondering if a monster box or stock 4r100 will bolt up to the 4.6 or will i have to make a new trans mount or crossmember or what? and whats the power difference between the non pi 5.4 and the pi 4.6. i plan on turning this truck into a prerunner so if i could get your thoughts on the two trucks that would be nice. i'm looking to get around 400+whp.

if you are racing SCORE or MORE in the dezert with your truck then forced induction is out of the question. the only way to get up there is the machine hte hell out of your heads, match em to good cams, and get good exhaust.

check on dezertrangers.com and race-dezert for better suggestions, only a handful of people on this site can maybe help you on building for the desert

The 4.6 engine didnt get PI heads untill 2001. Only the 5.4 got them in 99.
The nonPI 5.4 makes 235 HP, and the PI 4.6 makes 231 HP, so there is a 4 HP difference. I believe the 5.4 makes quite a bit higher torque numbers, Im not sure what the exact difference is though.

Why not just start with a PI 5.4? Then you already have 260 HP plus much more torque than any of the other engines.

I think I would start out with a 5.4 either way though...

ok well i found a 99 with the 5.4, but it has 120k miles. do you think that is to much. i think i would plan on a rebuild before i supercharger or turbo it tho. but as far as the overall truck do you think that is to many miles. the guy wants 6200 for it, what do you think.

That sounds very good to me... A monster box for only 400hp seems like way overkill for a $3500 transmission. I have 325hp at the flywheel on a stock tranny and its still strong as can be and the truck has been to the floor for about half of the 101000 miles i have on it...

if you arent racing it then forced induction is the way to go. there is NO way to get numbers like that from any cost-effective natural aspirated setup

monsterbox is overkill for 400hp.. stock ones handle around 450wheel torque. get a factory tech valve body and a stronger convertor and you will be fine. in my opinion go with the 4.6L for a play/sport motor...

You could buy a 97-98 5.4 and install the newer PI heads like i did, and slap in a set of cams, and do a few bolt on mods, thats how i got to 325crank hp, which is 265 rwhp. And for a full size truck, 4x4 like mine, it moves! i think you will be happy with any mods you do that are other than "bolt on"

right around the 95K mark the 5.4L timing chains start to slap and rattle... cause some annoying noises. and 5.4 has more issues with sparkplug blow outs than the 4.6L

so i looked around and found out for myself, i see that the 4.6 comes with the 4r70w(is this right?) and if thats what it comes with what can be done to it to hold aprox. 400+whp. i see that factory tech sells a build 4r70w, but is that going to be overkill and a waste of money when i don't need that build of a trans. let me know. thanks for your help so far

why not find a truck with a trashed motor, find a busted up navigator and go with the dohc motor? slap some cams in it, find the big bore kit for the mustangs, punch it out to 35x cubes and work the heads, some good headers and a programer, you will love the results you get from it
