Spark plug coils

I have a 2001 F150 Supercrew with 32K miles. My engine has been running rough (especially at idle) and I have been told by a colleague that he had the same problem and it was the spark plug coil. (apparently each spark plug as its own coil). Ford is asking $89 bucks each for this $5 part - does anyone know of a good aftermarket place to purchase these? (along with the part number)?

Thanks for any assistance!

You can blindly throw money at the truck and see what happens if you want to, but it isn't suggested.

COPs are known to cause misfire problems. However, they typically start out as a misfire under light to moderate load.

Is your CEL/SES light on? If so, have it scanned and post the codes.

You'll never find a COP for $5 new. Aftermarkets from any parts store are typically $50 or so.

Rough idle/running can be caused by a sizeable number of things including vacuum leaks, improper EGR flow, ignition misfires, fuel delivery problems (low pressure, injectors, etc), and more.

4.6 or 5.4?

Thanks for the response. Yes, my check engine light is on. I have had this rough idling for a while on and off. I brought it into the local dealership and they replaced what appears to be a solenoid controlled air valve of some sort -(they gave some story about too much carbon buildup, etc). Despite costing $600 including parts and labor, I stiil have the problem.

It is a 5.4 liter. I am going to purchase an OBD hecker at Kragens (sort of a basic model for $69. -- would you recommend this model)?

That's a basic code reader and will do the basic job at hand.

Once you have the code(s), c'mon back here and poke around (SEARCH using fault code as your search argument) and see what's going on.

FWIW, I've discussed all of the common codes/combos at one time or another, so use the Advanced SEARCH tool and include my username. I make my living working on complex computer-controlled electro-mechanical systems; vehicles are just extension that I happen to do as a sideline.

The ODB2 code is P0442 which indicates a small leak in the Evaporative Emission Control. I have to find my original gas cap (I bought a locking one last year) so I can see if this is the problem. Recently I spent a mint having the local Ford dealership attempt to troubleshoot (in vain) an idling problem (which is why I mentioned the spark plug coils). They replaced the CX-1867 Valve Assy. (YL3Z-9F715-AA) which did not fix the problem (although it cost me $600 to find this out).

Can this be the cause of my problem now? It is a solenoid attached to a valve -- about 6" long with of course in gasket mounted inlet and outlet.

Thanks for your assistance!
