Any year F-150 4.6 will work. Don't get a car motor.

The interenals of an engine usually last well beyond 130k if maintaned, its everything else that can really give you a headache. What kind of problems you having and why do you think you need a new engine?

it started as a small tapping i couldent locate, now it is ver loud and actually sounds like its coming from under the driverside valve cover, i posted here asking what it might be and i got no reponses so i thought that was a bad sign and am trying to locate a used motor now!

Pull the cam cover off and make sure all the followers are in place. It might be a collapsed lash adjuster.

I paid $650 for a motor at a salvage yard, it had 60,000 miles, I had to buy a new lower intake and change the oil pain, my mechanic charged me $350 to change out everything plus a new fuel pump. Good luck. Oh yeah, it took all day on the phone calling everyone, be carefull because some guys are proud of their high milage motors.

Well here is what I think. If u r going 2 spend the money 2 put a new engine in your truck spend a little more and go with the 5.4. There that is my 2 cents lol.

on the 5.4 do you think it is a straight swap or is there a comuter change required? and i have been told by a couple junkyard guys the 4.6 is much better, they dont sell them to much but they sell the heck out of the 5.4 becuse it has a bad bottom end ( thats what they say!)

The 5.4 is by no means a straight swap. Do a search here and you'll see why. As for the 5.4 not being as good of a motor, I kind of doubt it. Sounds like somebody blowing smoke up your skirt to me. They're both great motors.

Why not pay a little extra and get a recon motor (or get your own done) and have the warranty etc that comes with it? I would think if you are lucky enough to find a motor with 30,000 miles on it, it's going to be expensive and chances are, from a wreck so you won't know if it's ok or not til you've bought it and fired it up.

Like someone said, though, before you assume you need a whole new engine you ought to have it checked first, the fix might be relatively minor, maybe at worst just the upper block/s.

Just my thoughts on it.
