Lightbulb MAF Sensor cleaning = no more ping!!

My truck was really pinging going up hills, or at heavy throttle.
I knew it would be a good idea to try cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor, but just never got around to it. I was also afraid I'd damage the small wires getting the unit out.

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

I saw these directions and bought some electrical parts cleaner.

When I opened up the air filter to start the job, I could see the sensor wires right there. I decided, why not just spray them without removing the sensor??

I hosed 'em down pretty good, and was AMAZED at the results!!! The pinging is GONE!!! I can't believe it was that simple.

If anyone is having the same problem, give it a try. I hope this helps someone else out. This is a great forum. Thanks guys (& girls). -Jim

MAF in a '92?

I'll bet cleaning the MAF is not something most dealer/paid mechanics will do for you as a matter of course, unless there's something to suggest it needs it...and I imagine replacement is what most counsel. Good to see it worked for someone.

Now my question is: Is there A MAF in a '92 with the 5L engine (2wd reg cab) - there's no mention in the Haynes manual which in itself is almost fraudulent in purporting to represent models up to '96, it's got a few token updates, and almost no relevant photographs for the later EFI models...

I wonder if there's a crossover with the later manuals, as in, is there a version for the later models that goes back further? Might be more useful to me...otherwise I might have to consider buying a Ford workshop manual.

Lastly, what do you define as 'pinging' going uphill? Mine 'misses' or hestitates, but I don't hear the 'pinging' I'm told you get when you have an octane issue, etc...My engine has a couple of other issues I need to resolve before going too much further with troubleshooting (cracked manifolds but the cracks close as it warms up) but any shortcuts like this would be cool.

No, I didn't have any misfire. It would ping (yes, like low octane) when under any load or heavy throttle. ALL GONE now though .

94 was the first year for MAF on the 302. The 300 and 351 got it in either 95 or 96.

Change your plugs, wires, cap and rotar

I don't know what the first year for MAF in the ranger is, but the 96s have em at least.
