My cam position sensor has been bad for some time so I decided I'd better fix it. The mechanic I went to said the shaft was also shot. I don't believe him. He had it apart and I look at it briefly. What I saw looked like a small piece of pipe that had one side missing. Is this right ?

The cap was definitely bad, the hall sensor was missing.
