lost keys!
lost keys!
I have a 2000 F150 V-6 standard. i lost my only key with the chip in it. i have a spare key to get in and out of my truck. is there any way to start the truck with this one?
The newer trucks are equipped with a PATS (Passive Anti Theft System). You'll need to go to the dealership with your VIN (probably wouldnt be a bad idea to bring title and proof of ownership with you) to get them to make you a new one. The key you have will not start the truck.
Im not sure if your run of the mill locksmith can program these keys.

just a side note/comment. i also have a non computer key for just the doors. one morning at 330 am when i was going to work it was dark and i grabbed the wrong key, it would crank but not start... i figured battery drained.... too much voltage drop to starter... just didnt idle something clogged... and ( i kno this is very very wrong and very lucky not to cause any harm) kept cranking. it eventually started to my surprise! it ran like poo... no light (cel) or anything tho.. just idled terrible and drove terrible but it drove... it took me til 8am to realize my actual truck key was at home! i dont kno if it just over heated pats or heated up enough to make the relay click over or it was just one of those flukes of nature that miracally happened. but it did work and i would strongly not reccommend. i just wanted to let people know that for some odd reason it worked for me once (thats the only time i have EVER tried it) and i guess if u were in extreme emergancy and had no way of contacting anyone via phone or anything i would try this. i would rather ruin my truck trying, rather then have me or myself end up severly hurt or dead. BUT I WOULD DEF NOT TRY IT JUST FOR GIGGLES TO SEE IF IT WORKED!!!

Either use a dealer ( which means a tow in ) or find a PATS locksmith in your area.
You will need to use the key you have to cut 2 new PATS keys, and have them programmed into the HEC with either the WDS ( or IDS if they already upgraded for the CAN buss ) or a NGS ( a lock smith would have something like a NGS XL Transponder programmer from a manufacture like Hickok ).
Have them follow the procedure for erase all programmed keys and program 2 new keys.
This is one setting on the PATS programmer of choice, and set the truck up in a no keys programmed programming mode. 2 Key must be programmed, prior to being able to start the truck with this method, and this will remove the 2 ( or more ) that were programmed into the HEC already. You can only have 8 by default setting.
No easy way around this, I am shocked that a non PATS key started the truck, as posted above. I would wonder if there is a RMST system installed in it, to allow this. It should not have worked, as the HEC enable / disable function over the SCP network should not have enabled the PCM. The key word here is SHOULD...stranger things have happened.

Some implementations of PATS do disable the starter, ie my 98 Contour, but others do not. Instead, these usually kill either the injectors or the ignition via the PCM.

So I take it our trucks do one of the latter (cutting off the injectors)?
I cant really use my truck as an example...no PATS keys...it has a little plastic "padlock" looking deal that plugs into a port under my dash. If that little lock isnt there my truck doesnt even turn over. I assume this is some sort of aftermarket installation.

The under the dash key, sounds aftermarket to me, don't recall that being a Ford option, but it is not like I have seen EVERY one of them.
My truck will turn over with the non-PATS key, but it won't fire. All of the accessories work, but the THEFT light is on. I've hear that if you tilt the steering wheel all the way down and put your foot on the brake, a non PATS key will start the truck. Haven't tried it though, and it's raining like a **** right now so I'm not about to.

As far as I know, F150s started using PATS in mid-late '98. Superduties (except the Excursion) have never had PATS.
