2nd COP in 2 days

Replaced #6 last night. That was the 3rd one in the past year. This AM, I felt the miss at low RPM under load. By the time I got to work, I knew another COP went out. Went home for lunch, and the reader said it was #5. 4 down, 4 to go, I guess.

Been pretty wet here for the past 3 days. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

What year truck, how many miles?

Its unusual for COPs to go bad like that...are you sure they actually go bad and dont just need to be dried out?

It's a '97 Lariat SC LB. 178K on it.

So far, in the past 1 1/2 years, I have replaced #4, #2, #6 Monday, and #5 last night. 4 down, 4 to go. I wish I could find a deal on buying all of them.

They appeared to be dry when I took them out. Not a problem, it's a 5 minute job. But, man, that thing uses gas when it's missing!

I did a good thing last weekend…so I thought. I always wash my Expy about twice a year…like spring-cleaning, you know get in there deep and clean. But this means my engine as well. I usually go to the do it yourself bay…the one that says, “do not spray or clean engine”…well I do anyways. I have been doing this for the past 9 years. OK…here’s my situation. I have a ’97 EB Expy, I decided to clean the engine at home. It looks great! However, the next morning I got about a mile from my home when my engine went rough. Like the distributor cap got wet…from years ago. So, I limped back home and went to my Hines book and the internet. No distributor!!! Just these COP thingies. Well, I followed the manual for checking the primary and secondary resistance. While I was looking at each plug…I decided to go ahead and change out the spark plugs (first time 125K…nice) and bought 2 replacement COPs for $50 each and replaced #4 & #8, because I didn’t want to go back there again. 5-1/2 hours later, plugs changed out and found NO bad coils. Took it for a test drive. Still rough. Went to Advanced Auto Store, because they pull codes for free. Mis-fire on #6 & #7, but these measured “in spec”. Now I found out from another site that the resistance values are crap when static. An d of course the side that I have to pull off the fuel line. Then I lost the screw to hold on the fuel line and a fuel injected fell never to be found again. Two hours later (with a new fuel injector), I put it back together and started it up. Sounded MUCH better! Took it for a test spin. Much smoother, but still not purring, then the engine light came on again. Went back to Advanced and now #1 is mis-firing. At least this is the easy one. I will get another COP on my way home from work today and change it. Anyone else?

So, here’s my question…now that I have replaced 5 of 8, should I just by all new ones and spend another 3-4 hours to put in the remaining 3? And how do you clean an engine? Or maybe by me driving to the bay and then driving home, the heat evaporated all of the water off and that’s why after close to 20 no issues then this last time…all hell breaks loose.

8 COPs x $50 = $400 + $35 for spark plugs and anti-seize = $435 for a total replacement. How much for a deal to this job? Does anyone know?

Oh, yeah…one more thing…Thank GOD for wobble head extenders!

Depends on how your finances are and if you feel like spending the time on it...if it aint broke, why fix it?

there is a good thread somewhere around here...this link should work:
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=238516 refers you to this link...this is where the most information is anyway
http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...0&pagenumber=2

try this out...some products that you will have to buy, but they are cheaper than new coil packs.

Looked into it to have Ford do it for me here in WA...was going to run me about $400.00 for them to change out the plugs...yeah just the plugs, and then another $300.00 for the coil pack replacement...I'd rather do the work myself then pay that kind of cashola, and that's when it was like 40 degrees outside.

Agreed...that and a 1/4 inch drive ratchet did an awesome job with the retaining screws for the coil packs. Took me about 5 hours to replug the entire engine, and replace cylinder 1 coil pack...would have been A LOT longer if I didn't grab the wobble-heads!!

As for the "you-do" carwash...it's possible that the water all steamed off when you rinsed off the engine there...it was probably more atomized by the high pressure spray too...I'd just try the engine detail thread and spend the extra time cleaning by the engine bay by hand and less time ripping the skin off the back of your hands replacing plugs and packs.
