dead 4.6

I have a dead 4.6 on a 97 150, vin6(windsor) w/ 144k on it. Towed in and now in my garage. Cannot manually turn the crank, so it seized. the mountains must have ate it pulling my tandom..lol..anyway, what are my options? Called a couple of local junkyards yesterday and it's not seeming like there is much in the way of a used engine(the one I found was $1500 but had over 90k on it!!) any ideas why? Seems like these modular engines were used in everything, right? So what's the scoop and what are my options from here? thanks guys!

I'd look for one on ebay. I got a used 4.6 with 30,000 on it with a 5-speed (which I sold for $200) for $1000. I sold my old motor for $150 end cost - $650.

FYI.. I bought a remanufactured engine from aerengines.com. Cost 1900 bucks with a 3yr/100K warranty. Fired it up last Saturday for the 1st time. Runs like a champ. If you're going to keep your ride, you might consider a remanufactured engine.

So, probably a stupid Q, but other than the 97-99 trucks, what other 4.6 engines are the same? I know lots of things can be made to fit, but this is my worker, so not incredibly interested in going through the whole song and dance for a swap with a different plant.

DanielDD, thanks for pointing the way to another reman source, I hadn't come across that one yet. Has anyone else used these guys and put a year or two on one of their motors? Any hidden little surprises geting it to your doorstep? Thanks for the input guys!

They're in Mustangs and Town Cars and....tons of other cars too. The problem is that the truck engines are different from the car engines, but either will work. But because you are towing, go with the truck engine.

I just had a Ford re-manufactured 5.4 put in my truck, runs better than new, and comes with a 3year 36k miles warranty.

I just finished a 4.6L transplant into my F150. It was out of a 02 Explorer. It is a 4.6L but the installation was a nightmare. If you are looking for a new engine I would suggest sticking to a F150 and 97-98. There are so many different little thing that add to install time, unless you get a screaming deal , stick with the same vintage/manufacturing plant.
A Ford rebuild would be my choice next time unless you find a good deal. I got my 02 Exploder with 13000K for $1100, otherwise I would be bitter about the whole experience.
Good luck.
