And the insurance is going to be a bitch for you no matter what, you are an 18 yr old male driving a truck. It'll be close to what your payment is, no matter what motor it has in it.
+1
4.6
I have an 04 regularcab, and before I lifted it, I did a roadtrip from California to Texas, and I averaged 22 mpg. I was running stock tires, cold air kit, exhaust, and a superchips programer. A lot of people said I was full of it, but I showed them the reciepts. I kept it on cruise at 70 mph. In town I would only get about 15 to 18, depending on how I was driving.
Personally, I've driven both the V-8's and I own the V-6. The v-8's do have more power, but unless you tow stuff or ur environment is harsh, the V-6 is more than adequate. And, I can beat almost any V-8 off the line at a streetlight (I have no clue why, though). All I've got is a K&N and properly inflated stock tires. Maybe it's the bad drivers, maybe it's cause I got a manual. I dunno. But I will tell you that my V-6 has lotsa gettup. My max horsepower is above 5000 RPM's, and to beat all my friends, I never have to shift above 3700 RPM's. That should tell you something.
Besides that, if there's really 80% of the people with a V-6, maybe they know something about the area and engines best suited. (Here in DFW, Texas, though, everybody, like yourself, is all about the biggest V-8 they can get their hands on. It's a waste of gas and time if you ask me.) BTW, I get around 22 MPG if I drive nicely in the city. (But, with the way I drive--hard on the gas every time--it's still around 17.5 to 18 MPG.) That's around what a V-8 gets in the city, when they drive like a grandma. I can sport around all I want and still get the MPG that I need to be affordable.
Whatever you choose, though, do whatever makes you happy. If you're satisfied with a V-6, than all power to ya. If a V-8 is all you can live with, than That's your decision. I'm sure that everyone here can agree to that last part. If you're satisfied, than you made the right decision....And I'm gonna stop tryin' to preach now.

the 4.2 makes more torque up top then both the 4.6 and 5.4l but only by 50rpm does the hp peak higher... and the HP and torque peak higher on the 4.6 than the 5.4 which in actually would mean the 4.6 has more racing power than the 5.4 does.. two motors designed for different tasks though 5.4 is low end power 4.6 is mid to high... ones a short stroke ones a long stroke all in preference and what u need it for. but for towing get the 5.4 for economy the 4.2 for sporty and mild economy get the 4.6
