Yeah buddy.

We used to call them "Long Chain" 427's to distinguish them from "Cross Bolted" 427's, when bench racing.

What a cool piece of engineering.

I knew someone that had one of those in a '61 Galaxy Sunliner.

Red with red and white interior and white convertible roof.

It was a big hit at the local cruise scene, with that "Cammer" in it.

I had a customer who bought a 63 falcon and put a cammer in it! no lie! we built a set of one piece 2&1/4 inch headers for it. It was shock-tower-to-shock-tower motor! that was probably the sweetest ride i have personally seen!

Back abot 20 years ago when I went to a lot of rod runs, there was an old guy that would drive his T-Bucket from Houston up to Abilene, had a cammer in it, or on it is more like it. He would also drive it to the Arkansas rod run every year. He said he had opened it up only twice on the drag strip and he that was enough for him. He was always a big crowd draw just to stand and stare at that thing. The funny thing was, as many times as i saw that guy at runs, his windshield was always cracked. I can't imagine driving that thing several hundred miles.

Good read. However, I have to take issue w/ their list of 5 top motors. They included the HiPo 289 while excluding the 428 Super Cobra Jet, the 429 SCJ, as well as the Boss 351. Also, if you look at the impact a motor has had as a sign of greatness, then let's not forget the fuel injected 5.0.

Yup, those were the days.

I had a '65 Stang with a built 289. Ran a Tunnel Ram on the street for a while. Ran 12.40's on the track.

My brother bought a new 72 Mach 1 with 351 CJ Ram Air. Always had what we thought was excessive lifter noise. The local dealer tore down the top of the motor, and diceovered it actually had a '71 Boss motor in it! I wonder what that car would be valued at today, with basically the wrong motor in it?

What an awesome time to be young with a driver's license!

Any engine NASCAR basically banned after 1 race is ok in my books. Too bad it didn't get the publicity the hemi did, it's twice the motor. 600 hp's or something like that from the factory, ya, I too was born too late. Ford should, or somebody else should reintroduce this with new blocks heads etc. I'll bet not cheap, but worth every penny. I saw a couple of these in Galaxies last Galaxie Nationals, one was an orange 61 that's been around forever. The old lady said to me "what the hell engine is that?" Even she was turned on. Then asked why I don't have one too, after laughing I said that I work at Ford, I don't own it and listed what parts I've seen and how much. Her eyes nearly fell out.

Good post, great engine!!!

I believe they are also called "side oiler" too. My brother-in-law saw one at the Ford's 100th anniverary bash in Detroit. They initial heard it start up from afar - it was in a Thunderbolt - go figure!

Side oilers were on 65 and newer 427's, but the regular ones. I believe the sohc was too, just not know by that. All it was is where you dump new oil, in 64 it was refered to as a center oiler because the oil fill was in the front of the engine rather than in the valve cover. Also, thunderbolts used the standard wedge 427's (center oiler) but there were a few, such as Mickey Thompson's own made Ford Hemi driven by I believe Jess Tyree. This thing has been for sale a few times lately, the lowest price was I think $285,000 and then for a half a mill or close to it. It is 1 of 1, and just beautiful.

Your info on what determnies Side or center oiler is WAY off. It has to do with how the internals of the engine are oiled. Center oiler refers to having oil passages to the crank centered in engine and directly between Cam Galley and Crank galley. Side oiler is acctually offset to the drivers side of engine and runs through passages to the crank Galley. Side oilers are awsome for NASCAR. The cenfigul force insures the oil goes to the cranks bearings, because NASCAR runs in a roundy round fashion. Other wise there really is no beneifit in my EYEs at least.

Scotty!
