Wanna Be Cool: Water Pump Swap

Has anyone put a 2003 -2004 Lightning water pump on a NPI 4.6?
I am looking for more flow through out the rpm range, but particularly at slow commuting speed. I am willing to give up performance for cooling.
Any ideas?

The L pump is not even close to being compatable, an informed source tells me. Anybody tried a Cobra pump?

HI!... I looked at all the W/P when I built my 5.4. The one I settled for was the MEZIERE electric W/P. My truck has never run so cool. Picked up about 11RWH.P and I have it wired to a manual switch so I can run it at the dragstrip in the pits with the truck off.

Neal - Thanx for info.
I have seen your other posts re the Meziere, and it looks like the way to go. But my problem is that I now have four fans running on a 95 amp alternator, which is marginal already. So, I was looking for a better mechanical pump. I guess that a bigger alternator may be inevitable....

HI!... If current flow is the problem then upgrade to a 200AMP police package alternator. You will have to upgrade the ALT wire to a 1 gauge but it works out great. I have 2 16" DERALE electric fans, a 10" tranny cooler fan, and the electric water pump and I still have tons of current. Daily driving with the electric water pump is great. Never had a problem.

Ya..... the alternator could be pricey too. But the nice thing about it is that it pumps the same volme ( 200 gpm?) at idle as at red line! Say, when's father's day?

+ after further review - the Meziere pumps 55 gpm - no load....fyi

I shopped ebay last night, and the Meziere is a little cheaper there. It's hard to tell about the quality or origin of the alternators though.
Anybody know a good place for a high output alternator?

HI!... I got my electric water pump off e-bay brand new for $260(U.S). My alternator was upgrated to 200AMPS for another $100(CAN). 1 gauge wire I had at home, so it was free.

As I read this thread I am asking why I don't have a problem pulling nearly 12,000 lbs gross combined weight with an 02 4.6 on mechanical fan cooling!
Why do you need all this?
Put in larger capacity radiator. It's size already covers half the front of the truck and the motor is small.
I took the trans cooling out of the large radiator (bypassed) and use two aux coolers.

I hear you. I also hear a lot of others with other make cars and trucks with difficulty down your way.
Something to think about is that the cooling system runs about 200* minus your 115* that's only an 85* spread to keep everything within limits.
The A/C condenser is hot and lessens the radiator ability to cool even more under the narrow temp difference that already exists.
Don't be to supprised that what you do, trying to cool, results in less than expected returns for the effort.
One place you can take about 150* away from the radiator is install a large trans cooler or one in addition to what you might have and by-pass the radiator altogather.
Aiflow in traffic to cool the A/C condenser with the engine speed at idle or low, is a tough deal with out extra help and the power problems it can cause.
Good luck.

Your truck is a piece of crap if it runs hot just sitting there not doing anything. I've done plenty with my truck in 100+ degree weather at 99% humidity and never had my temp guage rise a millimeter. Look what I pull, and I have a stock transmission radiator.

I am bringing this to the top to ask about the battery primary fuses. I have the 200 amp alternator, but my battery primary fuses are rated at 175 amps. Will they work together, or do I need to replace the fuses?
