Gas Mileage

Hey everyone,
I have an '04 5.4 v8. I do not get the best gas mileage. What mods will increase mileage the most. I have been hearing taht putting nitrogen in your tires help gas mileage, and I heard an intake would help. I am wanting to get the best gas mileage possible because rumor is that gas will be over 3.00 a gallon soon.

Talking Nitrogen (LMAO)

Somebody's been yanking your chain my friend. If you put nitrogen in your tires, ya might as well change the winter air to the summer air in your tires. The only thing Nitrogen is going to do for ya is cost you money. Air is free. Unless you plan on taking your truck 30,000ft in the air or more, Nitrogen ain't gonna help ya. I may be wrong, your truck may be the next chitty chitty bang bang. Did ya get it to fly?

I have added a Flowmaster, K&N, and the notorious "Turbonator" to my truck, and still get only 15mpg (2000 5.4 SCAB).

Slow down, pump up your tires, don't let the tach over 2,000 rpm when starting off, don't drive over 65mph. Other than that, Welcome to a 5.4 V8 Ford.

I guarentee if you slow down, it will go up. You can buy a lot of products that might help, but slowing down is free, and everybody knows it works. That's the best advice for gas mileage I can give you. Sorry bud.

I got an idea. Thy don't you get a piece of wire and twist one end around the TURBONATOR. Holding the TURBONATOR by the wire, dip it in your favorite perfume, then twist the wire around one of your air vents in your truck! Cheap "Air freshener"!!!!! Plus, it will make your vent blow harder!!

I too think e fans are a good start. I've had my FAL 270 for 2 weeks and yet to calculate, but the drive I took this evening showed me using less gas for sure, not lots but noticeable. Really driving habits are the biggest thing and routine maintenance.

Gas Mileage

At just 700 miles I took a 3 hour road trip yesterday through a very mountainous section of central PA. Now my first mileage checks were during local driving, short trips, some extended idling and came in at 13.4 and the next at 12.7 I had been babying it all the time since it was new and figured "this sucks"! I read where one member mixes a little mid range 89 octane into his tank so I topped off with the 89 and took the road trip. Mileage came in at 19.16! And I quit babying it. I accelerated mildly and tried to keep it under 2K for the most part. I think it runs more efficiently at a little higher rpm's than what I was giving it for the first 600 miles. This is an 8 foot bed regular cab XLT with a just added CraftMaster Topper. This is my work truck. After reading some members posts on their mileage I gotta say I'm pretty happy! Just thought I would share. Have a great day.
Dave

Wait a second... you are attributing your increase in MPG to mixing octanes? I'm curious now that you mentioned it. Though I heard it wasn't good to mix octanes and I'm not sure technically how it would make that much a difference in performance. Anyone know?

My truck gets a measley 12-15 mpg but i drive 80-90 and slam the accelerator on takoff. I didn't buy it for the gas mileage!

Drive easily. Accelerate smoothly, avoid jack rabbit starts. Check your tire pressures. Check your alignment - if the tires aren't going down the road truely, that adds some drag that may affect fuel mileage. Slow down. You'd be surprised how much fuel mileage you can pick up knocking 5 mph or so off the speed you typically drive.
