Scan Tool, which one?
Scan Tool, which one?
I'm going to break down and buy a good scan tool, I don't want to waste the money on the cheaper one that Auto Zone uses - That one doesn't provide enough info. I would rather buy one that will give me some sort of history due to a slight cylinder misfire. Any suggestions ?

If you have a notebook, one of the PC-based scanner packages make sense. Prices range from $100 on up.
Personally, I bought the Alex Ppper OBD-II software and inteface.
Vry handy, cost around $125 or so.
Basic version is good for 96-03s from a single manufacturer. An enhanced version for most manufactures that include the new CAN protocol is about twice that.

Figures, I don't have the a PC based note book . I do have a duel G5 mac also a mac clamshell notebook. I'm down to one PC , it's loaded and newer (3.4-P4) It's the smaller type easy to move around. I could bring that out in the barn easy enough. A cable hookup from the DeskTop PC to Truck port. would be needed. Is that right ? Do you have the link to the website where I could get some info. I need the truck tomorrow and have change out No. 7 injector, If I had more time I could fish around for it. If you can save me a little time and direct me to the link, that would be great!!!

I had an Actron some time ago, I think this is the brand that AutoZone carries. It actually works fairly well. It gives the codes, and can clear them.
I gave this to dad, and got a copy of Autotap, and I upgraded to the CAN / USB verion when I got my '06.
Packages varry in price, depending on if it is just generic, or mfgr specific.
Autotap might be the same as the Alex Ppper that Steve posted above.
AutoTap is PC based as well, don't know if they have a MAC version, didn't have to look.

Steve ,
The engine light came on today on the way home , stopped at Auto Zone, I gotta PO1131, I did a search here in the forums and seen a post of yours.
This is the only code I had, the truck misses at times but not constant, it's more like bucking once in a while, lightly - not bad , then goes away, I did pull the intake recently and reused the old gaskets, they looked good and I re-tightend the intake accordingly(pulled it off to clean). So , U think it might be my o2's

I got a reader off of Ebay. Its nice, but now I have these codes and descriptions. They are PO351 Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction and PO354 Ignition Coil D Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction. So far I do not anything other than there is a coil or two that is bad. I wish I knew which ones before I do the work. Anybody???
Well Im sure if I shelled out the bucks for a higher end reader, it would tell me more.

Jim,
Did you get around to spraying carb cleaner around the intake gaskets to see if they are leaking? You can also use propane. Just take the burner end off a hand held torch and put a vacuum hose on it to direct the propane. Any way to find out what your fuel trim is at? I've seen intake leaks that will cause the O2s to stay stuck lean due to the added oxygen from the leak.

No I haven't , While the truck is running - spray the carb spray around the manifold gasket area and listen to here the motor fluctuate/hesitate. I'll try that first - thanks for reminding me..I remember you telling me to try that before.

I've tried a number of scanners. I have one from OBD-2.com, and I have a ScanGauge. I like the ScanGauge because it's an all-in-one unit so you don't need a laptop, plus it has a lot of extra features.
Here's a good site with plenty of OBD-II readers and even some user reviews: http://www.obd-codes.com/reviews - maybe that will help you with your decision too.
