Question Check Engine light???

Hi,
I have a 200 Ford F-150 and the check engine light just recently came on so I looked in the manuel and it said something about the gas so I used the better gas then it went off the it came back on and now it just goes on sometimes then back off sometimes and I am in the process of trying to sell this truck, so my question is how the heck do I get this fixed?? What could be causing this problem and I can Ifix it myself?

Thanks,
Amy

Have Auto Zone scan it - it's free. If your Ck Engine light is not on, I wouldn't mention that or they might try to tell you that they can't do it without a light present - like they tried to do with me, I got them to scan it anyway and they were able to pinpointed my problem. My Check Engine light had been going off and on that same day.

I'd go to Auto-Zone and have them down load the code. Chances are, it's gonna be P0401 Low EGR Flow (very common code for Fords and Mazdas with more than 36K miles on them). If it is P0401, they'll try to sell you and EGR Valve. Typically, the EGR Valve is not bad. Normally the EGR ports are clogged and need to be cleaned. In my experience, the DPFE sensor tends to go bad at this point also (probably have to order one on-line or go to the dealership as most after market joints don't carry them).

Did you not read worland's advice or are you specifically setting out to ignore it and cost yourself considerable wasted time and money???

starsnstraps3,
You can do this yourself if you are mechanically inclined and have a set of basic tools, or if you have any friend(s) that can do easy mechanical work on a vehicle. You can also do a search of this site and you will find plenty of helpful info.

Hey projectSHO89, why don't you try being nice. I believe if you read worland's message, it stated EGR valves don't "TYPICALLY" go bad. Worland stated his OPINION, not a fact.
