Rebuild a 4.6 with PI heads, intake, and comp cams or a 5.4 with PI heads, intake, and comp cams.

Dude, your truck is already 10 years old. Why don't you just start over with a newer truck with a 5.4 in it. You will have to do a considerable ammount of mods to a 4.6 to equal the pulling power of the factory 5.4

You gotta remember, ford designed your truck to do the best it can and last a long time. If you get a larger motor, it can do better, and still last a long time.

i say 5.4 or i'm with chester8420, buy a newer truck. do not rebuild the 4.6. 5.4 has more torque and horse power.

Yeah that 0.8 liter can add a LOT of power, huh? I'm happy with mine, which just hit 137k, and still runs like new. I'd say rebuild the 4.6 with PI heads and cams. The one time I rode in a 5.4 truck, I was not all that impressed. It's not a mind blowing amount of power difference, IMHO.

From the looks of his truck, he doesn't need a new one, ESPECIALLY with all the mod money spent. Doing all of it over again, just to end up in the same position 9 years from now doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If the motor is the only thing broke, why not fix that, and save the 25-40 grand?,,,,98

What you want is torque (since you have really big tires and you want to tow your boat), which the 5.4 will give you. But the 4.6 can give you plenty of torque if you put the proper mods on it.
I guess its really just a matter of how much you want to spend.

Why use a pony when you can start with a horse? Mod the 5.4...

I've towed my Ramcharger with it twice now. Once on a 16ft. trailer, and once on a car dolly. Never complained a bit.,,,,98

How much more would it cost rebuild the 5.4 over the 4.6? Also getting a new truck is out of the question I have way to much damn money in this truck to get a new one. Here is one thing I got 2 consider the 5.4 is a 99 E150 van engine. Eather way I go I'm looking at 4 to 5K. Thanks with a chip, header, injecters, pullies, mas air, and throttle body. I'm looking at it this way why if you got the money, And youre rebuilding a engine anyways why not build it the way you want to?

No, just riding around, there isn't a lot of difference. But when it comes to towing, the 4.6 just doesn't match the torque of the 5.4. Think of it, you go up on displacement, you usually get more torque. Even if you souped up the 4.6, it still won't have higher torque throuought the entire rpm range, unless you do a LOT of stuff to it.

Two things to consider: One, If you heavily modify your truck, you're probably gonna tear it up. So if you don't have a lot of money, don't do that.
Two, If yo go to the 5.4, you gas mileage is gonna SUCK!! If you switch to the 5.4 you can kiss 300+ miles to the tank goodbye!!!

If you get 14 mpg then you have driven over 300 miles on a tank.

Yes the 5.4 gets horribly worse gas mileage as opposed to the 4.6. My 5.4 gets almost as bad mileage as my dad's V10.

It's a RARE occasion that I get 14mpg and mine is a STOCK 2wd!!!!! Look at what you've done to yours!!! And you get better mileage than my stock 5.4 does!!!!!

My gas mileage recently has been running 13mpg on a regular basis. That's up 2 mpg since I removed my cats.

But what is the reason the 5.4 get so bad gas mileage? I thought the 4.6 and the 5.4 would get about the same thing.
