Generally speaking, the larger the motor, the worse the gas mileage. Generally speaking.

I've heard of several people that say they get better mileage with the 5.4, but I don't know how. My mom gets 22 mpg with her 4.6

Well my 5.4L is estimated at 16 city and i dont know about highway. I'd say 5.4L but yeah your MPG level will drop. But whenever you mod a engine up it will drop anyways. Also being lifted your trucks MPG will drop, engine has to work hard to push its body now. For a stock 5.4L ( though i think it is ) mine sure is a monster. I've pushed it to its limits doing donuts, burnouts, streetracing... 5.4L sounds pretty good on the idle also but still i want Magnaflow exhaust. So i guess i'm rooting for the 5.4L here haha

Since it will probably cost the same or less maybe for the 5.4L , get that instead. You're starting then with 30 plus more horsepower and god knows how much more torque. The 4.6 will struggle more than the 5.4, thus using more gas. Makes sense right? 4.6 is great don't get me wrong, just that it is less on power to start.

My vote....obviously 5.4, I'm biased.

OH ya, as far as mileage, I've gotten a worse of 16 mpg with all city, and best of around 24 mpg pretty mixed. Pretty good if you ask me. I have a reg cab 4x4 flareside, 5.4 auto, 3.55 L/S. Getting ready for e-fans tomorrow so we'll see how many, if any mpg's I pick up.

The 5.4 should only get slightly less MPG than the 4.6. Then again mpg has a lot to do with your driving style. I tend to drive like a jackass and lay into it. As a consequence my MPG's are lower than they could be.

Please tell me how you get 24 mpg. What do you do? How fast do you drive? Do you drive like a corpse? You're telling me that you can go over 530 miles on a tank of gas??!! How to you calculate fuel mileage? No offence intended.

My 5.4 gets better milage than the 4.6. Reason being the extra torque means you don't have to get on it as much to accomplish the same thing as the 4.6 would do. If you stand on the 5.4 it will get worse milage than the 4.6 but all the 4.6 will see is your tale gate. You are comparing the same bore and a 4.16 inch stroke of the 5.4 to the 3.5 inch of the 4.6. Can you say torqure???? Unless you are comparing the same truck with an engine swap you cannot realy say that the 4.6 is better. Swap the engine then compare and you will see the difference.

JMC...
What do you think would make those lash adjusters stick?

Do you think it's worth taking my motor apart to "fix" the clicking noise?

Well...I wouldn't say the gas mileage is good. But my average on my 5.4 is 14.5 or so city and about 18 highway. Today I filled up at the first low fuel ding, which is what I usually do and it went 365 miles and took 25 gallons.

ok sounds like the 5.4 get about the same fuel mileage as the 4.6. I still have not heard anyone with a 4.6 say what kind of mileage they get. So please let me know so I can compare the mileage and make a good move with what engine to go with. Right now I think I'm leaning more to the 5.4 from the what I have heard so far.

Build the 5.4 to install in your truck.
Yesterday I stopped at a local Ford dealer to have the Cruise Control Recall done and looked at a Regular Cab with 5.4, tow package, 6 CD, etc. It was on the north side of $29,000.
I thought I could put some dollars into my 97 and not make monthly payments.

T Ellenberger. What kind of fuel mileage you get with your 4.6? Also what does a F-150 have on it extra with a tow package?

This one goes back out to chester, drive like a corpse, nope! I'm either really wrong on my math, but I averaged that during a period of time. I drive pretty fast because I like the sound of my muffler, so I'm usually around the 16-18 range. I have an SHM (superchips chip) and run high octane. Mileage has been seemingly worse lately, haven't done the math on just how bad lately but I'll keep ya's posted.

Remember I was asking about the fan clutch, today is efan install day, so for kicks I wanna see how much more mpg's I get if any.

Also, contrary to most, running A/C on the highway is probably what got me such good gas mileage. JMC would know the distance when I say that 1 tank took me just past Kingston home in the summer, A/C on half the time and running 130-140 km/h through T.O. I was impressed and the old lady was scared when that stupid light stayed on for about 45 min.

Good day gents.
