crate motor question

I'm thinking I might have shot my 5.4 motor. Until I get to start tearing it down, I wont exactly know how bad off it is.

As I was looking around for a crate motor, just in case, all I could find was an 03 Navigator crate motor. It's a 5.4 DOHC 4v with a calibration code of 3G-262-AB. Just wondered how much trouble it would be to drop that into a 97 F150 that has the original 5.4 in it now. I have the E4OD tranny. Be nice if I could find one to bolt right up to it.

Eventually I was wanting to rebuild the tranny and motor, and throw a supercharger on it. My plans kind of sped up now that there is something wrong with the motor. Don't know what would be the easiest way to go, rebuild mine or try to find a crate motor? Anyone know where there is a crate motor that would fit easier and work with the tranny and computer and all of that good stuff? Guess I'm just mainly looking for ideas here.

Any help or input is appreciated.
Thanks,
BT

Try www.aerengines.com. I ordered a 4.6L engine from then last month for $ 1,900.00. This includes a 3yr/100K warranty. They delivered it to my door and picked up my core without any additional charges. They are an OEA (original equipment assembler) for Ford. They've been in business for 60 years. In my view, this is the way to go.

You can also check out KarKraft here:
http://www.karkraft.com/long_blocks.htm
You can get just about any block you need from them. You can actually get a Lightning long block and bolt the blower on later. You will have to live with the little lower compression until then. You will need major reprogramming of your computer to run the 03 Navigator crate motor as I'm pretty sure it is a 32 valve 5.4 motor. Other problems include the different wire harness after the 99-00 model trucks. It is doable but not a direct bolt in.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks again,

That's out of an 05 though. The wiring wouldn't exactly match up would it? I have a 97.

There isn't anyone that makes a kit to rebuild my stock 97 5.4 into a strong enough motor to handle a supercharger is there?? If there is, that's what I need. Or would I need just a whole lot over stock to run around 9 pounds of boost. I don't plan on going much over that. Still tossing around the crate motor idea though. Trying to decide which way would be better: building mine into a strong enough motor for the charger now or buying a crate motor to get around for now, building mine up over time, and then selling the crate motor.

Thanks guys,
BT

probably wouldn't be good putting a '05 in the '97 - '03 generation would confuse the computer maybe. If you get a built up crate post pics of that monster haha

I am putting an 02 4.6 in my 97 F150. To simplify the set up I am using the old intake. So the inlet and all sensors will be the same. Will probably need to get a tune when I am done though as the engine is quite different. Good luck with your search.

I wouldn't mind running the 3v heads on my 5.4, but I don't want to get into anything too expensive or go that far with it. I don't need that much power anyways. It's an everyday driver, but I want it to have a little more get up and go to it. Just can't decide which way would be the best way to go. Build or buy a crate and slowly build up the other one... Decisions, decisions.

I found a place to rebuild the bottom end of my motor to handle the charger. I could have the heads rebuilt, but I'd like to just buy brand new ones that would handle the supercharger. Anyone have any suggestions on that?? Or somewhere to find them? It's a 97 5.4 again...

Thanks everyone,

BT

BrandonT,
The Lightning’s use stock PI heads. You can easily change over but will have to change the intake manifold to a PI intake.
Also, the three valve heads on the 04-05 have valves that are computer controlled. Very complicated to retro-fit, at least until someone comes up with a kit. With all the Mustangs that are talking about it, that may not be too long from now.

Putter,
The lower intake off your non-PI will not fit the new PI motor. The upper intake (goose neck) will fit just fine. I just completed the non-PI to PI change over in my 97 and my stock computer works just fine. You will gain performance with a tune. I need a tune because of my blower.

Check out Fox Lake performance heads. They are expensive but there built strong. www.foxlakeracing.com
