Question about piston rings

I was just watching trucks on spike tv, and Jessie was talking about piston rings. He said that if you have a gasoline engine, to replace the ring at 185K. Well I'm at 171K, and wondering when you guys replace them at, considering each car/truck runs a different compression rate, and what the cost would be. Thanks.

if you need rings then you need bearings and timing chain, time for an overhaul. Lots of work but fun if you like that stuff. With having the heads done, block boiled as long as it doesn't need a bore job, new cam and lifters, gaskets and bearing set about $1200 if you find a good parts house

Yeah, I have 215,000 on my truck, and still have between 115-120 lbs in each cylinder. Rings are not a typical maintenance part, they're replaced when they go bad. If you're not burning oil like crazy or smoking or feel like you're driving a 4 cylinder, you're ok....

Like 98Lariat said, unless they go bad, you dont need to replace them like a regular maintenance thing.

Unless your burning oil/seeing blue smoke, have bad compression on a cylinder, (due to the rings, could be other stuff) or are already tearing into the whole engine, there is no point to replace them.

I always replace my rings at EXACTLY 185,000 miles, but it's because Courtney told me so!

Replace 'em along with the rest of the engine when it blows up. Otherwise, keep on rollin'.
