2000 5.4 with 99,995 changed plugs at 70,000 everything's OK so far. I think this problem only occurs if a plug is cross-threaded either from the factory or during a plug change otherwise you should be fine.

I've thought the same thing. I'm sure it happens.

1998 with 185K miles. No plug problems. The engine has been removed and is being replaced with a rebuilt engine from aerengines. I'll install the plugs BEFORE putting the motor into the truck.

2000 with 35,000 miles. Changed the plugs at 30,000 no blown plugs. . .unless you count. . .when we tried to remove the #4 plug it was stuck tight. While trying to work it loose part of it broke off leaving nothing to get ahold of with the socket. My husband replaced the rest of the plugs and put the coil pack back on the #4 plug thinking we would just run it with the old plug, however, when he took it for a test run the #4 popped out. It must have been loosened just enough. Thankfully my husband was sort of anticipating something like that to happen and he stopped immediately and called me, we towed it home, he put the new plug in #4 and everything was good to go!

Raisin

$850! My 97 5.4L blew #3 plug at 92K (I changed them at 72K), and it cost me about $80 ($64 was for the COP that the plug wrecked when it blew) to fix it myself in my garage. The truck now has 213K on it and I changed the plugs again at 200K. I can fix a lot of blown plugs for $850.......

i think the problem with people blowing out plugs is that they are thread in wrong and they strip out the hole. my neighbors ford did spit out one to. it was from someone screwing in the plug wrond and stripped the hole. i dont really think it is the issue of plugs flying out of the engine but people screwing then in wrong.

Yeah, I've never even heard of this happening until I came to this site, and I know tons of people that have f-150s I don't think it's very prevelant, and it's really easy to crossthread a spark plug.
