timing question
'89 f150 5.0L fuel injection. I have a question about setting the timing. I set timing to 10 degrees BTDC as per specs. Truck acts like it's bogged down and misses quite often when at any cruising speed not under heavy load and upon acceleration (but not as much, that's where it boggs down). Will also miss a little when revving in park/neutral. The Chiltons manual says with fuel injected engines timing adjustment is not possible and a guy at an auto parts store said that if I didn't unplug something computer related? (sorry I can't remember exactly what it is at the moment) when I set it that it will double my timing setting. So judging by what he said and Chiltons I assume the timing is set automatically and I guess I'm at 20 degrees BTDC now. So my question is this. Should I re-set the timing to zero and will the truck automatically set to the correct timing itself? Another question. I don't have anyone around to help me get #1 to TDC this time. Any suggestion on how I can do that solo? If I make sure the rotor is pointing to #1 doesn't that mean #1 is at TDC?
Thanks guys

What you need to do is unplug the PIP SPOUT connector. It is the equivalent of unhooking the vacuum advance in a carbuerated car. It is a dead end connector hanging from the ignition module connector right on the side of your distributor. It is gray plastic and is square in shape. Unplug it so that the PCM will not advance the timing and then you can set base timing. Good luck!
