Smoking on start-up
Smoking on start-up
I have a 2000 F-150 with just over 70,000 miles. Every so often, not constantly, I'll get blue smoke from the exhaust pipe when I start the truck. My driveway slopes toward the garage slightly, so the truck is in an ever-so-slight nose down attitude. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. The truck never smokes at any other time, and like I said, it's only occasionally now. Is this indicitave of future problems, or not something to be worried about? As I work out of my house, I don't necessarily drive every day. I would say the smoke appears once a week or so. Your comments would be appreciated.
I have the same problem with my 96 302, How many miles have you got on the engine?? 70 000???, I figure mine is just valve seals getting bad...it does have 200 000 miles on it... But same thing only happens once out of 6 or 7 starts
My 01' 5.4,4x4 s-cab has done this since day one. It now has only 14,000 on it(not my DD) and it still occasionaly does it. No noticable oil consumption, so I'm not worried about it.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Thanks for the feedback. There doesn't seem to be any appreciable oil loss, so I doubt it's something serious, however, I'll try looking into the PCV today.

Idle the engine for 15-20 minutes then snap the throttle wide open real quick, see if you get any blue smoke. If so, you may have a valve stem seal problem. I haven't really seen this on later mod motors though, I've seen it most often on early-mid '90s 4.6s.

Mine has done this since day one also. As far as i'm concerned, it's normal. Doesn't use any oil, so i'm not worried.
How's your oil consumption?
I don't see any real oil consumption. As I said, It's only occasionally that I see the smoke, and only for a very short time. Usually, it just seems to be a puff and that's it. I change my oil regularly and it's never low. My concern was it might be a prelude to something bigger.
