Adding a chip! is it worth it!
Adding a chip! is it worth it!
Is there anyone that has added a chip to boost HP for pulling in 5.4 Supercrew. I have a 31ft camper that pulls easy but told about these chips that will help on The Transmission. Any suggestions.
Your best bet would be to get a programmer from Troyer. The chips can cause damage, while the programmer is custom built for your truck. You can chose towing tunes which will help greatly. Right now he is having a group buy on them. Check out the programmer threads.
I wouldnt say chips cause any damage. In fact, they often come with the exact same tunes the handheld tuners do. The tuners are just more versatile and easier to use.
But I agree otherwise, the group buy from Troyer on the XCal2 is the way to go.

I would still recommend getting a tuner. As said, it will help with the shifting patterns and it will give the truck better throttle response, as well as more power and possibly better gas mileage.
Ditto on most of that. Chips don't cause damage, bad tuning causes damage and you can get bad tuning in a handheld just as easily.

I haven't had any trouble with my chip and I've had it for over 4 years. I got it from Sean Hyland Motorsport in Woodstock Ontario Canada. I believe they burn a Superchips chip, but it made a noticeable difference, especially shifting. Problem is, you have to use premium gas. They probably have different programmers now, but running good gas probably made my engine run so nice. Changed the plugs @ 160 000 km's and they were still mint. Only prob was rust on the outside where your socket goes. Engine washing with little drying- my bad! Can't go wrong with chips and the more performance things you add, you tune and make it even better.
If you want towing performance, change gears. I went from 3.55s to 4.10s pulling is much better. I also have the troyer xcal II programmer which wasn't noticable to me. It is nice to program your speedo for tire and gear changes though. Gears, install kit and oil is less that $400 if you have the tools to install yourself. Also more aggresive gears lighten the load on the motor and trans.
For your transmission, some people like to use the higher pressure from a chip/programmer to firm up the shifts to reduce slippage and make the trans last longer. Others say that increasing the pressure is not a good idea (harder on the pump, lubrication issues, etc.) and use a shift kit in the trans to get firmer shifts. I chose to use the factory tech seperator plate to firm the shift up. They are about $90, search on them. I got the xcal II programmer programmed to leave the transmission at stock pressure.
