Is it a 2 valve or 3?

I recently bought a 2004 Expedition 5.4 with a production date of 2-11-04. I understand Ford went from a two valve to a three valve engine at some point and was wondering which engine I might have. Also wondering why they would have changed this.

Excuse my ignorance, I'm trying to educate myself.

I dont think they moved to the 3V 5.4L until '05 for the expy
I know you could get the 3V 5.4L in the '04+ (new style) F150s.

The 3V didn't make it to the Expygators 'till the '05 model year.

Doesn't it usually say in the manual? And on a lot of the new 5.4's I've seen it printed "3V" On the cover panel on the top of the engine.

Just a thought...

The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement
and number of cylinders
• L — 5.4L, SOHC, EFI, 2V, V-8, gas
• R — 5.4L, DOHC, EFI, 4V, gas
• W — 4.6L, SOHC, EFI, V-8, gas
