Hey there,

As 98Navi said, yes they can start to go bad before tripping a code. With these newer engines and 02 sensors the voltage is criticle between the matched pairs. If you have as much as .1v difference between the left to right it can start causing issues. This is one reason it is good to change them in pairs if one goes bad.
I have a reader that I can see the voltages on my 02 sensors. I noticed my idle was getting a little rough when the engine was cold and about 3 weeks later I got a too rich on the rh side. I cleared the code and it didn't come back. I started reading my 02 voltages and the forward rh sides voltages where always was off from the left side...showing a rich mixture. I was heading home from Illinois one night and the rh 02 sensor finally went completely and the truck didn't want to run hardly at all. It then finally gave me a code, when it failed completely.

Vey good point.

The problem is, is that these trucks have become so comlicated to fiqure out that we need a degree in science to get them to run right.

my next car will be a straight up chevy 350.

But it IS DUE to our dependncey on oil.
we are to blame.................
