Great MPG...Bad Omen???

Bought my first Ford full size this week, used 2003 F150 STX/XLT with 4 wheel drive and 5.4l. Only put a couple hundred miles on it and was a mix of
highway, back roads, in town and about 30 of it was in 3-4 inches of snow and ice with 4 wheel drive engaged. I was expecting maybe 12-13 mpg but was surprised when I topped of the tank to see 8.9 gallons over 164 miles
which works out around 18.4 mpg.

Before anyone screams BS.... thats the actual reading and I know it can't be right.... Tires are stock 265/70/17. speedo checks out fine (compared with my wifes car which is dead on).

I have owned 4x4's before and never got near that so wondering if something is wrong. Engine has good power etc... but is it possible to be running lean or something and not throwing a code?

I've really been VERY easy on the throttle with it since I'm still getting used to it but know it wouldn't have saved me that much. Is it possible their is something "wrong"??? getting scared I'll start bragging about good gas mileage and a week later burn a hole through a piston or something....

You might have the truck that the EPA used for the MPG sticker!!! 'cause else nobody gets close to it. My f150 gets 13 mpg mixed driving, sticker mpg is 15 to 19!!

My 2004 5.4L Supercrew is getting 17.5 mpg very consistantly. Mixed Freeway/City driving. But my friends 2006 5.4L Supercrew is currently getting ~12.0 mpg.

Some gas stations pumps will leave as much as two gallons of room in a tank because of their automatic stoppers. 164/10.9=15.04. That sounds a little more realistic. Who knows, maybe it did get gas mileage like that, but check back with us after you've burned a few more tanks. If you did get a truck that's running that effeciently you are certainly lucky.

Yup, agreed. Let us know how the next few tanks go. If thats true, you are one lucky dude, but not quite as lucky as the guy in the other thread whose wife bought a mustang, haha

I'm guessing that he divided the miles driven by the gallons pumped.....which is how I do it, and am only getting about 13-14....

I topped it when I first got it then refilled at the same gas station (even the same pump!). I will let it go a few hundred more and check it again and post the results.

The results were from dividing the miles driven from gallons pumped.

Loving the truck so far!!!

Yeah, i'd let it go a few more tanks. I was excited when I was getting high 17's to high 18's in my '92 Bronco 302 4x4 driving to Texas from California. Then I realized I need a tune up.

I have regularly squeaked out 17 and 18 mpg for a tank out of my 5.4. I have a tuner and a couple other mods and only 2 wheel drive. On a couple long road trips out west I even got a couple runs at 20 and 22 mpg and I very seldom drive the speed limit and I have the tickets to prove it.
I think my ram air hood does aid some in mileage.

Sled...

Just put gas in mine for the first time. 12.5 mpg. Feels like I need a 5th gear.

My 01 150 4x4 scab 5.4 3.55ls 4r70w has gotten 20 mpg on one trip to Myrtle Beach running light, but thats all down hill from where I live. I usually get 14-18 mixed driving and 13-15 while towing my 3000# bass boat. This truck gets better mpg than my last ranger that I had and does as well as my beloved 96 XJ cherokee that I have. You can't beat a Ford Truck.
