stalling and hesitation

hello everyone im new to the site but i check here often for advice. thanks everyone. but i now have a dilema that i cannot solve. it started first with an occasional stall when i put the truck in reverse. i then took it cross country and when i got to my destination she would stall out every time that i put her in drive and just sat there. (like at a stop light) i had it checked and recieved varied answers that it was tranny, and that it was not. so i adjusted and i would just simply put her in neutral to stop. no problems. until today. with no prior signs of trouble she has decided to prevent a hesitation. it is at idle (750 rpm) and while driving. if i am 4th gear and accelerate but not shift she will moderately jerk. and if i put it in neutral and rev it i get, what sounds like a misfire da...da...da...da...daaaaaaaaaa. please i need help here. if anyone has any ideas that would be great. thank you. oh btw she is 97 f-150 king cab with a 5.4 and the E4OD tranny.

How many miles on the truck? Have you changed the plugs, spark plug wires? This are good to do anyways. Also change the fuel filter. These are a couple things that you could do and might cause a hesitation. And it will only cost about 75 bucks. I had the same problem on my 01' and did everything. It only had 50K miles on it and changing the plugs ended being the one that fixed it. Only problem was i was so fed up with it that I still wanted to trade it in. You could also look at the IAC, and 02 sensors. These trucks are notorious for the IAC. All of these are really a shot in the dark unless you have a code that the cpu is throwing. It may be one of these things but could be as simple as a vaccum leak. Any codes?

Yep. The IAC is probably the reason for the stalling at idle while in gear. You can try cleaning it, but it often requires replacement.

The misfire is most likely a plug or COP. If you can induce the misfire long enough, you should get a CEL and a misfire code. Once you have the code, it's a lot easier to focus on one or two cylinders to make the repair than to shotgun it. Changing the plugs or the COPS on the 5.4 is pretty involved, see the sticky for directions.

Mine did the same thing and it ended up being a lookse connection on my MAF. Check the connection to make sure it is good
