4.6L Using Oil!!
4.6L Using Oil!!
Hello all,
here's my story, original ower of a 2001 F-150 4x4 with 4.6L, used Castrol 5W-20 GTX and have oil changed every 3k miles total milage is 75000 easy miles. Changed to Mobile 1 full syn on my last oil change hoping to get more protection out of the syn oil. Long story short the motor is using oil now and was 2 quarts low on after 4k miles and has a blue puff of smoke on start up which last for 1 or 2 seconds. Understand is could be the PCV or even worse the valve guide seals. Some folks have told me to try Rislone? any ideas???
Thanks,
Mike

Different motor oils have different conditioners in them . . . You should stick to the same one so your seals and such see the same conditioners, a change can have negative effects . . . Sometimes the type of oil is not as important as sticking to the SAME type of oil (I know this will open up a can of opinions). Try a motor flush first, change your oil and add a can of STP conditioner, then change it again after about 1000miles &add a can of the sealer (Risolene or whatever), and stick to one brand of oil. Might help, might not.

My 96 Thunderbird with a 4.6L has about 83000 miles on it. It had always ran dyno in it and about 8000 miles ago i noticed she was burning oil. I changed her over to synthetic and added a half a bottle of Synthetic LUCAS to the oil............she hasn't burned a drop since.
Its probably the switching to synthetics at 75000 that caused it.
I would go back to what you were using originally, if that doesnt work you can add some oil conditioner....But I think the damage has pretty much been done.
I would absolutely avoid using an engine flush at this point. I think it would only make the problem worse.

Just to toss in my experience with switching to synthetic oil with a good amount of miles on the engine....
I switched to Mobil 1 when the truck had some 83,000 miles on it. I was running Pennzoil 5w30 in it for about 20,000 miles and I'm sure it had some other Dino oil brand from day one up to when I bought it with 62,000 miles on it....
Anyway, I've not experienced any more or less oil comsumption and I've now got 153,000 miles on it. No blue smoke either. I do use about a qt every 3,000 miles and change the oil every 6,000 miles. At the 3,000 mile mark, I just add a qt, wait for 6,000 when it's down again and change the oil and filter.
She was burning one qt/3,000 miles for the 20,000 miles I ran it on the Pennzoil....
I also switched the wife's 1990 Plymouth Acclaim 4 banger to Mobil 1 when it had 120,000 miles on it! It's only a grocery getter now, so it does not get many miles put on it anymore, but it has not leaked a drop or produced any blue smoke. It's now at 135,000 miles.
Anyway, that's been my experience with it.
I would not worry too much about it. You can add all that 'miricle in a can' stuff, but it's only a band aid for whatever the problem is....
I'd say until you are leaving a blue smoke screen running down the road, just remember to check the oil from time to time!

i have consistantly run Valvoline (non synthetic) 10 w 40 in the summer and 5w 30 in the winter untill about 80000 miles and switched to Valvoline maxlife ( non synthetic) in the same weights and now with lucas oil treatment. i have 135000 miles and 0 smoke comming from the tail pipes and significantly less top end chatter on cold start ups. to me changing brands of oils is like changing your blood type. It's bound to mess something up. BTW isnt a 5w20 oil a little light to be running in a v8. i know the manufacture suggests a 5w30. so maybe the lighter oil didnt provide enough protection in the original 75000 miles and regardless of what you ran afterwards, the damage was already done.

thanks for the info,
my plan is to change out the PCV valve add the same oil (Mobile 1) until its full and drive it another 2000 miles and see if it uses oil and smokes on start up. if that continues i'll switch back to Castrol GTX 5w-20 (original oil) used from the start and see what happens. Hopefully things will improve with the PCV... however, murphy has already shown himself.......
i have a quart of Rislone but haven't came to the point of using it yet. Honestly, i think all that stuff is "Snake oil" and really doesn't do much to fix matters...
Thanks,
Mike
