If you are absolutely sure the noise is coming from the power steering pump, you could drain the system and replace the fluid with MERCON ATF and see what happens. It will only cost you a couple of bucks to try. I had a problem with a noisey power steering system once on a Ford vehicle under warranty and the dealership overfilled the reservoir slightly to alleviate the problem. Also, it has been my experience that alternators make a whining noise in certain failure modes.

I went out yesterday with a small bottle and sucked out enough fluid where it's between the MIN and MAX mark, I also noticed how brown (like dirl fluid) the fluid was. I don't know what power steering fluid should look like, but it's really ugly brown??
Anyway, to make a long story short, after taking fluid out, the whine is GONE!
I couldn't believe it myself, but after driving a little over an hour yesterday I never heard the whine like I normally do with the window down!

Wheres the best place to drain the fluid from the system? I see hoses running to the power steering cooler looks like the lowest point, is there an Oring or anyhting there that I will have to replace if i lossen it? How many quarts of Mercon will I need?

could there be air in the system? I've pulled and replaced w/ Mercon ATF sound still remains...
