Check Engine Light....????
Check Engine Light....????
I have 1996 f150 4.9..the check engine light has been going off and on for a couple of months now..might stay on for a week or so and be off for a week or so..it is currently off and I have some time to mess with it ..My question is does the light have to be on to read the code or is there any way to look at history of most recent past code...will appreciate any help and info I can get....Thanks
Depends on the scanner. Some will pull the history codes (Hxxxx) and some only pull pending (Pxxxx). As soon as it comes on again, take it to Advance Auto or Autozone, and have them read the code. Post the code here, and we can help you from there.

There is no such thing as a history code (Hxxxx).
Pxxxx codes are NOT pending codes, they are Powertrain codes.
Codes are maintianed in the PCM's memory until either they are reset (scanner, removing power, etc) or until either 40 or 80 (depends on model) error-free drive cycles are run.
Have it scanned, then SEARCH for the codes or ask.
