EGR and roaring

EGR and roaring

I used to have a 94 Z28. I did quite a bit of modding, including removing the AIR pump/blocking off the EGR. Of course that car was OBD I, and wasnt very hard to do. Is it possible to remove the EGR system in the 97 F150? Is there a way to trick the computer into thinking it still functions?

Also, sometimes when I drive.. when I'm sitting at a stop light and then drive off, the truck will start out making a roaring sound.... some kind induction type roar, then after it gets rolling, usually after shifting into second, the roar goes away. Doesnt happen all the time. Why does it do that? Is it normal?

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to get rid of the EGR?

Just one less unecessary thing that could fail, and when it does, causes significant drivability problems. This forum is loaded with posts about cleaning EGR channels and DPFE stuff. I thought it would be just simpler to do away with it. EGR does nothing exect rob power and reduce nitrous oxide emissions...

I was just curious why you wanted to. It's your truck, do as you please. But it's worth noting that the EGR valve only operates at part throttle, so performance and idle quality aren't affected. As far as power is concerned, you are more likely to lose power by removing it because it helps to lower the temps in your combustion chamber. If your cc is hotter, you're more likely to have pinging, and your timing will retard. You're also looking at a hotter (higher temperature) running engine overall.

Like I said, it's your truck, do as you please. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, I was just curious why you wanted to remove the EGR. Someday maybe someone will give me a reason that convinces me to remove mine.

Correct, there is no reason to remove this function.
The function does three things.
It advances the ignition timing and cuts fuel. This improves fuel milage.
Lastly the function cools combustion temps in the range the engine is most used at to lower oxide emissions and help the cats do their clean up work.
Defeating this item can help shorten cat life to boot.
