Cam Questions

I would like to put new cams in my 2000 5.4 but as I look at different ones I'm not sure exactly which would be best. I know a lot about motors but I'm not sure what the coorelation between duration, lope, etc. is in reference to what the different sizes can make the motor do. I would like a cam that is set up for off idle - 3500 or so. I know that I will have to have my ecu re-programed so when I do this I know that I'll have to call Mike Troyer but any other info that could help would be appreciated.

P.S. I really want this baby to sound like it is shaking the shop apart when I fire her up

IMHO cams are a poor choice for an upgrade on the mod motor. They are expensive and stock cams are decent. Unless you have many upgrades, there will be very little improvement in power, and i'm not sure that you can even run a cam that will give much of a lumpy idle. I think Neal has cams that have a somewhat lumpy idle, but he has a built engine with many mods. The money you will spend doing cams is about half of what a "starter" supercharger(Ford/Powerdyne) would cost and there is a definite increase in power.

This won't be easy to do with EFI. The Carb of older street rods is what cuases the loop. The Idle will change after install of different cam just not as much as it would in a carbed vehicle.

Also, Everyone on this site is against putting in cams to inhance performance unles you are already breathing through a Super/Turbocharger at around 12-18 psi. I disagree with that totally. I don't know what will work best with what, but I would find a Mustang site and ask around there. They will help more than the folks here. Just make sure they realize you are talking about F-150.

You are not working on a Mustang' what works on a mustang will slow a heavy truck down you need torque. The cam you described is in you're truck now. Save you're money call Troyer first tell him what you are after and get his opinion. don't start with expensive parts that may or may not work. Those lumpy idle days don't seem to hapen with the modular engines. The lightnings making 600 RWHP sound like any other truck idleing around the pits, but look out when you let them loose!!

Thanks guys for the input. I already have a Diablo tuner but it doesn't allow for any other engine tuning specs. other than timing/fuel curves etc. I think my next upgrade will most likely just be a supercharger as per the info. here. With the current mods that I already have I'm putting down right at 340 RWHP. I guess for a 4X4 that's not bad but I would like to be able to get my heavy *** 4X4 to at least not get smoked by a buddy of mines stock Harley Edition F-150. Any other info. you guys have would be great.

What kind of mods do you have that are giving you 340 rwhp? With a 20% drivetrain loss, that's 425 hp at the flywheel. That's about 50 more hp than your buddy's stock Harley Edition F150 and 165 hp more than your truck when stock.

Am I missing something? What mods do you have that added 165 hp?

Yeah man cams may help all around let engine get a lil more lift and duration but even on a stang new cams by themselves gain about 6hp. Oh P.S. I seen em do this cam swap on horsepower tv on like a 2000 mustang and ats all they gained although they said itd pave the way for future mods down the road im inclined to believe the stock cams were really good to begin with.
